hand behind the ball
« on: June 28, 2009, 03:54:23 AM »
i've heard people say that the pros all keep their hand behind the ball for their hands behind the ball rather than on the side. but i've also seen advice to rotate the wrist and come up the side to change the axis tilt to get more hook.

which is the best way to go? or am i missing something when they say to keep the hand behind the ball?

both, keep your hand behind the ball and at your release rotate your hand from behind the ball to the side.this rotation will give you more axis rotation that will result in more skid up front and more hook in the back part of the lane. up the back of the release is good for heavy oil and or tighter lines while more rotation is best to open up the lane when you move deeper inside.

Go to YouTube and search for Tommy Jones (or WRW or Chris Barnes) slow motion release.  --  JohnP

Timing is the key. Keeping the hand behind the ball is IMHO vital for a powerful release that actually generates roll and not just side rotation and skid, with less control.

That said, turning the wrist or imparting revs is nothing wrong - but it is decisive when you do it. You can do a lot to the ball with your hand, but ONLY after the thumb has cleared the hole and the ball is just hanging on your fingertips. THEN you can turn the wrist to add side rotation, or curl fingers to add revs. If you do it earlier, you come around the ball and rob it its momentum and "free" action on the lane. The timing is essential!
