What do you aim for?
« on: June 15, 2010, 01:11:30 PM »
What I normally do is stand in the center and throw it over the second arrow from the left.  In my league tonight I was having a lot of trouble doing this.  I asked my friend what he looked at when he threw his ball.  I figured it would either be the arrows or the pins.  He told me he looks at the dots which are before the arrows.  He says they are closer and a lot easier for him to hit.  His average is around a 200 and bowled a 660 series today.  I tried doing that for my last 4 frames and had success.  To me it seems it's easier to hit the dots because they are closer.  Does anyone else do this or is it not correct?  Any information would be helpful.  Thanks

I was told to look at what you can hit. Unless you are playing with breakpoints just look where you feel most comfortable and know you can hit.

I personally look approx. 2-3 feet in front of the arrows.

I'm going to bowl a few games today using the dots and see if that helps me control my shot bbetter.

If I aim at the arrows or any closer, the target is so sharp and easy to see that I feel like I have to hit that exact board, and my armswing tightens up from trying to be too accurate.  Also, I may hit that spot at the arrows, but not get the ball out to my intended breakpoint down lane.  Therefore, I prefer looking at a two or three board area down the lane at my breakpoint.  I'm more consistent with a free, loose armswing when I do this.

Depepnding on conditions I will use any target up and down the lane. On heavy volumes I will target the dots. On THS I will generally be looking soewhere near the arrows (2 feet before or just past) and when they are pretty dry I will look down the lane near the range finders (if present) to help the ball push through the friction.

Years ago, when I used to bowl No-Tap more often, I would often target the reflection of the 10 pin on the lane.

I use the arrows, most of the time, excepts dry lanes, when I will look at a target a bit further down the lane.

I found that using a visual target closer to the foul line like the dots makes me bend my upper body forward, which is detrimental to leverage and balance for me. Using the arrows is helpful for me to get into a decent knee bend and into the slide, just as if an airplane is homing in for the landing on a radar beam - the visual target and this line of sight is a great help to me.

But: that's me. You should try several things and check what is most beneficial. But the "natural" approach must not be the best, so I'd consult a coach about this who can also judge your overall apparoach and how things work together! Minute things can have a huge impact.
