How to measure hand span?
« on: September 20, 2007, 11:42:02 AM »
Looking at my old ball(which cracked), so trying to check my hand span.  Do you measure from the center hole to center hole(finger to thumb)? Or is it the closest edge to the closest edge?
thanks,
Jim

coad, the two ways a hand span is measured are cut to cut and actual. Cut to
cut is as you said, the very top edge of the thumb hole to the very bottom
edge of the finger holes.

If you are using a thumb slug and finger inserts, actual would be the very
top edge of the thumb slug hole after drilling to the very bottom edge of the
finger insert hole after installation.

I've always wondered this.  When you say cut to cut, do you mean the first initial cut that the thumb slug and inserts goes into or do you mean the edge of the whole inside your slug and inserts.

If mine is litterally cut to cut, i have a small span 3 15/16 Middle, 3 7/8 Ring.  If its the 2nd way using the edge of your actual thumb whole in the slug, and edge of whole in insert then my thumb will be hard to judge because of bevel.

Thanks

If you're checking the span, bury the thumb in the ball and lay your fingers across the finger holes.  The appropriate "crease" (or joint) should hit halfway through the hole's diameter.  Remember that this is just a rule of thumb since every bowlers hand is different as far as flexibility, etc.

Here's a link that may explain it better from BrunsNick:

YOUR span is measured from the front of the thumbhole gripping surface to the front of the fingerhole gripping surface.  But the span your driller uses to punch the holes is based on the initial cuts the slug and grips go into, this is what's called "cut to cut".  Span guages have a stud ~3/8" long that hooks on the front of the thumbhole and eliminates the bevel problem, then you "eyeball" any bevel on the finger holes.  --  JohnP
