Ball for Low-Rev Bowler

Hi all.

I've been back into the swing of bowling for about a year now. I have a Storm Diablo that I use as my main ball and an Ebonite Tornado Warning for dry lanes. They are both 15 lb balls - the Diablo is fingertip and the Ebonite is convential. I throw the ball at around 16 mph with very low revs (emphasis on the very low).

The Tornado Warning isn't all that great unless i am trying to generate a split or the lanes are as dry as the desert. I mainly use it to go after 7-pin spares. The Diablo is pretty nice for me, but has a real tough time generating strikes - I leave tons of 10-pins. The Diablo has a tendancy to break too early and I hit head on for splits or on the Jersey/Brooklyn side of the headpin an awful lot unless I move far left and try to muscle it into hitting the pocket correctly.

I'm looking for a ball that doesn't need a lot of revs and has a late break back toward the pocket so I can start turning those 8's and 9's and splits into strikes (This weekend I gave myself 5 splits in one game - it killed my series and left me with 195, 113, 187.) The Diablo actually is pretty good for making spares, but I need a first ball now to compliment it.

Any recommendations?

My recommendation is this.  Before looking into a new ball, invest in a few lessons.  It sounds like you have not been bowling for very long, and now would be the perfect time to get some lessons.  Also, chances are your coach can help make ball recommendations, and do it much more effectively as he/she will know how you bowl.  In a completely general sense, I might look at a pearl reactive to complement your Diablo.  A pearl reactive will get down the lane further before making it's move, and generally it will make a sharper move to generate more entry angle into the pocket.  IMO, the best pearl reactive going right now is the Doom from Hammer.  It's a great looking piece, very controllable for a newer bowler, and packs a great punch.  And, best of all, it's cheap!

splendorlex was right. invest in a few lessons... also not to ridicule your ball but the diablo is should have been manufactured to break a little early and be smooth. i would just like to know what surface it is at and what about the drilling on it. first i would change the surface. go to your nearest pro-shop and tell them the problem. tell them you want to change the surface. after that look for a coach... maybe before or after lessons if you havent fixed your problem change the drilling to a later layout. then after lessons and some reccomendations, like splendorlex was right... pearl, pearl, pearl.

Thanks for the advice on the coaching - I know I could use it, but there's not a large availability in my area for good coaches. I'm a little leery of changing the surface too much on my Diablo since its turned into a really nice spare ball for me as is. The thing with the Diablo is that I have such low revs it skids a long way and then takes off left. I either need something that will go out right and then come back left without a lot of revs, or something thats designed to go a long way straight down the right hand side and then cut back left sharply at the end.

about the surfaces... i would go to the local proshop in your area and ask what kind of surface you have on the ball... then tell them for a couple of days i would like to experiment with the surface of the ball. have them change it to what they think would work... try it... if you like it leave it, and if you dont either go in and tell them to try somthing else, or have them take it back to the original surface you brought it in with.

At my local bowling center there is someone who uses the Diablo every week as his strike ball.  It hooks early and smooth and hooks just fine.  No need to ridicule the ball here.  It could be a ball maintenance issue since the ball is supposed to be sanded.

Also, for making spares you can throw just about any ball (or any ball) straight.
