Incorrect Drilling Span?

Hello,

I got my disturbed this weekend drilled and it has been killing my fingers and I can barely hold onto it. I took some pictures. Yes I have short stubby fingers!

I'd take it back to the driller and tell him to fix it for free or give you a new ball.

Then I'd consider taking future balls to a more competent driller or buying from a different shop.

By the way, didn't you test/try the grip or better yet throw the ball before paying for it and leaving the shop???

We paid in advance and picked up 3 hours later. We bowl in a different location than the pro shop. I am meeting with him today so i just wanted to make sure I wasn't incorrect

Yea that's entirely too long. Has this person drilled balls for you before? If so, then unless you've changed some specs, that's way too long.

He has drilled before but only conventional. This is my first finger tip ball that is why I was unsure. How would you go about the pro shop visit? Just straight ask for a refund and new ball ?

I would have him remeasure the grip and plug the thumb. Plug work doesn't do much to the ball. I would calmly walk in and say my ball doesn't fit and I would like you to refit and redo the work. If he refuses to do it, then take your ball somewhere else. If your driller is not competent to fit you, then you're better off at another pro shop anyways. A good fit and craftsmanship is worth the drive. At one point, I was driving all the way to DC Maryland to get my equipment done (2hrs away). Nothing beats good craftsmanship.

We can't see your thumb, so we're all assuming it's all the way in its hole.  If that's the case, yes the spans are way too long.  The gripping edge of each finger should be half way between the first and second joint.  I would mark this point with a pen and show him where the spans should hit.  He should fix it by plugging the thumb and redrilling.  However, I would make him use a slug, it's best not to have the thumb contacting the junction of the plug and the ball.  --  JohnP

Yes I have my thumb all the way in. Went to the pro shop today, he wouldn't admit that it was drilled incorrectly. Said it was drilled right and that "that's fingertips". But yet went to another pro shop about 15 minutes away and as soon as i showed him the ball he told me it was incorrectly drilled. Now will filling the thumb in and redrilling 1/4" up ruin anything? I just ask because I am unsure to ask for a refund and get a new ball or to just plug/redrill.

You bought a new ball and you need to have a new ball drilled to fit! If you plug and redrill you void the warranty and I wouldn't accept that! You didn't buy a plugged ball, but a new in box and shouldn't settle for anything less! Just my $.02, Bruce

Fitting of a ball seems to be a art form.
Ask some of the better bowlers that you see and ask where they have their equipment done. Most bowlers like to spread the word of a good driller and if he or she charges a few extra bucks it's well worth it.
It might be to late now, but purchasing a used ball and plugging to find the right fit can be a few extra dollars, but money well spent.
