Adjust to the ball? Or have the ball adjust to you?
« on: October 20, 2012, 03:20:20 AM »
Feeling a little lost at the moment, I have very high track and inverted track that sometimes hit the finger holes(thumping sound as ball rolls down the lane).
1 week ago, I tried changing my release to add tilt to lower my track, get a "not inverted track". Practiced about 10-15 games, track was a medium typical track with around 20 axis tilt, and got more length due to the increased axis tilt.
But to be honest, it just didnt feel natural and comfortable to me, hence I do not know whether to revert back to my natural swing or continue with the new method.
What would you folks do if you were in the same situation?

Change is never comfortable.  If I were you I would get some coaching to evaluate the changes you tried out.

It takes time to get comfortable to a new way of doing things.  Whatever you were practicing that didn't feel comfortable, have a coach watch to see if it's "better".  And by better, I mean having the ability to score better more consistently.

If he/she thinks its better than thumping the finger holes, stick with it until it becomes muscle memory and the comfort issue should pass.

First, change your mindset, you adjust to the lane...not a ball. Second, I would go see a professional coach and get lessons.

Do anything the wrong way for long enough and doing the right thing will be uncomfortable at first. If you like the ball reaction you're getting better, and it's keep the track off your fingers like you wanted, stick with it. It'll be comfortable in no time.

Always have different balls with different drillings and surfaces. My motto if don't have a shot  make one lol. People laff at me cuz i carry so many balls but while the laffing n struggling I'm walking to jackpot table lol. Always play lanes never let lanes play u

Do you have just 1 ball? If no then does this issue happen to the rest of your equipment as well? If it's just a certain ball that this happens with then it's very possible that your very high track doesn't play nice with your current ball layout.

I had an issue a while back that my track was extremely close to the finger and thumb holes, I mean right on the edge of them! If I used any ball with the pin under the fingers I would always roll over the middle finger no matter what I did with my release. I ended up redrilling the ball with the pin in my ring finger hole which was about 1" move, the ball no longer rolled over the hole and I regained the look I wanted with the ball by doing a slight surface change.

Yes it is possible to have conflicts like this between your release and ball layout.

Beyond the solid recommendation to find a good coach, I'd look at changing finger pitches to increase tilt a little bit.  It is a much easier change to make than completely altering release.

Finger pitches do NOT alter tilt...lateral finger pitch are merely for comfort...

I had a similar issue, I tried altering my release to fix this issue with a good coach and ball driller. Neither one could really cure the issue. I would be able to change my release just enough to get the ball to roll right on the edge but accuracy, revs, and hook were absolutely killed by the new release.

It was determined that my current release with any pin down layout wouldn't work for my style. Plugged the ball and brought the whole layout from pin under to pin over and no more rolling over the fingers.

i also have a very high track.  i had my  shop guy watch and we decided to put a weight hole near to my thumb ( i was throwing a storm prodigy).  i never rolled over the thumb but it was right at the edge.  the weight hole moved it away from my thumb just a bit.  (also used to take a bit of finger weight out)

not saying i know what i'm doing but the shop guy seemed to and it worked for me.

A weight hole low can raise the bow tie which can place the wider part of the track closer to the thumb...adding the weight hole also increases the flare the overall flare thus pulling it off quicker.

thanks to all the feedback so far. Just to update the situation, I found a few methods to lower my track and avoid tracking over the finger hole:

1. Increase track flare. For me, I reduced pin to pap from 5 3/4 to 4 1/2.
2. Keep the ball inside the shoulder during release.
3. Drop/release the ball earlier. As if you are throwing diagonally downward instead of forward. This is the image I imagine when I swing. Prevents me from pulling up on the ball.

All these helped me and now I am bowling much better. I dont need to rev the ball like hell or throw the ball at light speed, and still achieve very good pin reaction.
