Lane dimensions & Distances
« on: February 26, 2017, 10:30:26 PM »
This may seem like a trivial question however i can assure you that it's a real one. How can I tell where the 30', 35', 40', etc. mark is on a lane?  When looking at oil pattern sheets and it shows the length of oil is 35' for instance how can I tell exactly where the oil stops so I can figure out where my ball is going to begin the hook.

Are there markings or anything on the lane to give a bowler some clue as to where these distances are?

You estimate distance by using your eyesight mainly.

The lane is 60' long and the arrows are at 15', half the lane would be 30'.

If the lanes have breakpoint markers, the outside markers on 10 start at 40' and are 3' long so end at 43', the inside markers start at 34' and are 3' long so end at 37'.

If there are no markers, then you just got to eyeball it.

Watch Ray Wongs video here, he's got some good tips on estimating distance:

I wish at least one of the houses I bowl in would throw down some breakpoint markers.
