Long time bowler making a change
« on: October 31, 2004, 12:38:08 AM »
I'm the tipical down and in 2nd arrow player.  I've done this for years until just recently.  Earlier this year, I purchased two Ebonite TPC PLayers and had them both drilled for fingertip.  They both have a nice arc to the pocket.  I play both of these on or around the third arrow.

My usual starting point is on the center dot or one board left with my left foot.  I drift a little left when I finish my slide.  My main ball is an Ebonite Matrix Conquest drilled fingertip.  It no longers skid-snaps.  It will just roll.  Maybe a different sanding pattern and grit change is needed.  I'll have to experiment with it on my spinner.

Now with the TPC PLayers, I stand about 10 boards further left and play on or around the third arrow.  THe players have a nice arc and a hard turn toward the pocket.   I usually don't like to use the TPC players in my house because of too many mechanical problems.  Too many balls are being damaged.  I usually play them in another house.  Should I continue to use the Conquest or take a chance with the Players in my house?

Cheers

Robert

Tough question to answer. It kind of depends on the bowler and how he reacts to "damage" to his  ball...  For example, a guy I bowl with had a little "normal" nick from equipment the first night he was using the ball --- he made the house replace the whole ball....Me, as long as the nick wasn't in my track I'd just keep using it (I'd tell the house owner/manager just to go on record, however, and then ask for a reasonable adjustment if the problem continued).  Don't know how you'd react if that happened, but from what you describe it sounds like you're asking for trouble -- "too many balls are being damaged"
Based on that I'd say keep using your Conquest --- it's a shame you can't take your "babies" there and use them but the cost of bowling balls being what they are who wants to risk it????   Any chance of picking up a used TPC somewhere???  You'd have less of an investment in case it got damaged.

P.S. That's a sad state of affairs for that bowling alley -- that's got to effect their lineage

So you like this guy????
Yeah, he treats me sweet -- I met him at a bowling alley.         (Matchstick Men)

Well I'm using the Conquest because it has alot of surface damage to it.  It has been sanded twice in the last year and a half.  I have it now at 1200 grit w/ factory finish polish.  It just no longer skids/snap.  Could be very dry lane conditions however.

I threw one of my players last evening at my house and it didn't show any damage.  I got lucky.  A friend of mine had an old AMF and it got caught under a wheel (ball return)??  and made a 1/2" wide X 1/4" deep gash 180 degrees around the ball.  Very scary...  Another friend at the police department got a ball back with a 2" chunk taken out at the finger holes....brand new ball....

I guess it could happen at any bowling alley, but more frequently at mine..

Cheers
