Need help, problem with 10 pin.
« on: October 18, 2004, 10:32:41 AM »
I just recently purchased a columbia particle scout.  I like the ball, but I dont' feel as thought it's agressive enough.  I was hitting it dead center yesterday.  And quite a few times, the 10 pin was never touched.  I have had this problem ever since the beginning of the new ball.  My friend has a lane 1 freak.  Now that ball is agressive.  I want something like that, but not as drastic.

Is there any way to fix this issue?
Is a new ball the cure, or is it me?
What should I do?

I'm sorry it's a track not a lane 1.

I also had another question with stance.  when I start the lean into my bowling, should I get low or should I keep tall with my back straight?

your 10 pin problem is probably because the ball is burning up. try moving forward on your approach or giving it a little bit of lift. your question about standing up straight or not is really a bowlers preference. if you stand up straighter you usually have better accuracy. i actually am so low and bent over that you can not hear the ball hit the lane. so it is whatever you feel comfortable with.

audio28 - Often times "burning up" means the ball is expending too much energy on the lanes before it reaches the pins.

If you are in the pocket your angle to the pins may not be correct and so a slight change will make a difference.

smitty8288 gave a solution that he uses to combat this problem but leaving ten pins can be all sorts of problems.

You may want to try a few and see if it helps.  If you hook the ball to the pocket like most of us you will want to try several adjustments.  Sometimes you can move your feet to the right a board or back up a few inches and that is what most people do.  This allows the ball to have a slightly higher entry angle angle and often times will help you carry out the 10.

One thing most bowlers have to do is to look at the ball reaction once hitting the pocket.  The ball should hit the 1-3 pocket and then continue to drive into the 5 and then the 9 on the left side.  THe 5 should take the 8 out.  If the ball deflects a lot due to burning up the ball will hit the 1-3-5 and then hit the 9 really solid. This often times causes the 6 pin to go flat to the channel or ring the 10.

If this is happening then moving in to find more oil so the ball can save more energy to the pins and drive the pocket will help you increase carry as well.

You will have to experiment.  Sometimes there is no easy answer and only experience will tell you what you need to do.

If you can post a profile that would help as well.

also you are throwing a scout, i have this ball and i love it, but it will not react like a track freak, how is your scout drilled. mine is drilled 4x4 stacked i guess they call it, the ball goes long and then flips, helps to get the ten out. try moving your feet on the approach alittle up or back, sometimes an inch or two helps to carry tens. if that dont work, move a half a board left or right.

There are a couple of different types of 10 pins.
The "ring 10" - "solid 10" - "man, I was robbed" 10 pin -
the ball hits the pocket a little bit high, and the 6 pin goes back, while not touching the 10 pin. These are the ones that hurt. The ball is probably starting it's finish a little early.
They can be helped by
- moving your feet left 1 to 1/2 board
OR
- moving your feet UP 4-6 inches on the approach (this only works if you don't finish right at the line normally)
OR
- changing your line - a little more inside - to catch a bit more oil, and get the ball finishing a hair later.
OR -
changing your hand position to cause the ball to finish later.

As a beginner, the first two are the easiest to understand.

The other type of 10 pin is the weak 10, where the 6 pin just lays down in front of the 10. Frustrating, but in my opinion, easier to solve. Caused by the ball finishing late - for whatever reason.
Strangely enough, the adjustments are the opposite of the ones above!
They can be helped by
- moving your feet RIGHT 1 to 1/2 board
OR
- moving your feet BACK 4-6 inches on the approach
OR -
Squaring your line up - maybe moving feet and target to the right a bit, to avoid "oil puddles", hang spots, etc.
OR -
changing your hand position to cause the ball to finish earlier.

However - the most important advice - I agree with PhireX - when you learn to pick them up consistently (19 out of 20 leaves), you will not be worried about them any more, and you won't leave as many. Cool, huh?

i would either move 1 board left to go for a lighter hit.. if you're flush in the whole..or i'd move a board right for a heavier hit..that's usually if the ball is rolling up too late.
