looking for tips
« on: January 20, 2016, 07:42:12 PM »
hey,

new to the forums...

i've been reading what y'all have to say in the beginner's board about how to get started and wanted to get my own gear to make the game a little more enjoyable.

been thinking that I can get a pair of shoes (http://tinyurl.com/zzavrxd) for around $30, and a nice ball (drilled) for around $80-100 so I'm not competing for house balls when I'm going to play.

i used to bowl straight on using a 14lb but recently adopted adding spin to my tosses that looks something close to the 'tweener' shown on this page with a 12lb: http://tinyurl.com/jfxttj6

my first instincts on balls:

let me know what you guys think, the dollar goes further in this bracket so any advice helps.

thanks,

newcomer

Of the three balls you listed the Strike King is the only one with a reactive resin coverstock, which will allow the ball to hook with much less effort than the others.

I don't know how serious you plan on being with bowling, but consider spending about what you would on a new ball for a good pair of shoes.  If you plant, then you may not need to, but if you are going to slide, it will pay for itself on saving your knee to spend for a good pair of adjustable sole shoes.

Spend the extra whatever to get a slide and plant sole. Other than that, the strike king of the three is your best bet to begin with.

If you are on a budget, you could also check with your local pro shops and see if there are any good deals on used bowling balls.  That way you can save a few bucks and use it towards the shoes.

thanks for the quick advice/help

if you guys wouldnt mind linking an example of these slide/plant soles so i can get an idea of what to look for that'd be great.
i do slide forward at the end of my bowl, not sure what that entails as far as which shoes to look at or not... and what issues would i come across with the shoes that i posted in my first thread... just curious.

also, i've been reading more, and found a deal on some storm, tropical breezes, what do you guys think...? pretty cool

I feel about any entry level performance ball from any company would work for you. As far as shoes, personally I feel to get a decent pair you can call your own.
I would however look for a decent coach to help you out. Then practice. Once you get some time and consistency under you, decide what to get, or what not to get.

It is worth your time to talk to higher average bowlers in your centers to find out where they get their equipment, who helps them with their game.

Please feel free to post links to balls or shoes that you think would be good deals for beginners. Trying to look at as much as i can to make the best choice.

also what weight would be good to recommend? I read that with custom drilling to your fingers you should be playing up 1-2 lbs from the house ball you play with.

Thanks

IMO the Ebonite Cyclone is the best ball for the money on the market, and at a low end price.  --  JohnP
