Choosing first ball for Russian bowling conditions
« on: March 19, 2020, 12:50:05 AM »
Greetings to all!

As topic names - I finally decided to buy bowling ball, not to play with theese ones
(11 lbs brunswick, and my fingers really hurts afterwards.)
But there is sooo much information like coverstock, shape of the core and ect. And, since I live in Russia, my "local pro shops" have only souvenirs, pins and T-shirts, so I can't ask them for advise.

So, usually I playing with 11 lbs balls, because I can throw them smoothly, without loud noise. I can't hold more thatn 13 lbs house balls (without finger inserts) by my fingers.
My average 160-170, and record is 198. I bowled in 15 different bowling alleys, and lane conditions usually are almost dry. Don't need to wipe ball with a towel, cause I cant feel the oil on the surface of the ball. After 2 hours of bowling there is dirt stuck on my palms.
Not far ago, i have tried two handed style, and I really liked it.

So, I looked for sites selling bowling balls, and not sure that https://www.bowling.com/ can ship to russia, and have found only one shop that have russian office and can deliver balls from USA to me ( https://shop.qubicaamf.ru/ ). But they can sell only Storm and RotoGrip balls...

After some research, I've chose Pitch Purple, because it is urethane (as I live in russia and don't have local pro shops, that can do the maintenance to remove the adsorbed oil from coverstock). But, of course, I'm not sure. Looking for yours advise.

Ow, and another question - I ve read a lot of "after ~50 games you need to do..." this "games" is exactly 10 frames?

Thanks all,
Vladimir.

Wow, Russia. Welcome to the board.

From the sounds of your lane conditions, I would get something polyester with a core. Pretty much everything else is going to hook off the lane. Like a Track Spare + or similar.

Thanks for the answer!

bowling.com tells that light-medium oil is suitable for pitch purple (or light oil for pitch black), so why cant I just use axis of rotation of the ball so that the ball won't hook off the lane? (sorry for my bad english)

Once I played on the oily lane (dont know what the pattern it was, but there was oil on the ball after returning back). This bowling alley is farther than the rest bowling alleys, but sometimes I can go there.

So I want to choose performance ball, which I can use on dry lanes with a little hook, and sometimes on the light-med (pretty sure that wasn't heavy) lines with more hook.
Any suggestions on storm or rotogrip balls (bowling.com takes 250 usd for delivery, I will use my 'local' variant, which offers only storm and rotogrip)?

Thanks.

You could check out ebay, lots of bowlingballs there and if you buy make sure you choose a seller within the global shipping program, it makes shipping cheaper.

It is bad timing, because of the corona virus the cost of shipping has almost been doubled.
It is not important to buy the most expensive ball, very often a cheaper ball is better. More expensive ball is often for lanes with more oil.

If you choose a ball from storm a Tropical surge should be more than good  enough.

Good luck, hope you get your own bowlingball soon, but dont overthink what ball to get, you probarbly going to buy more than one anyway ;)

Might I suggest a mop, towel, squirt bottle and some oil?

Try to develop a style without using your thumb. It is very popular through out the world and all the best bowlers throw that style. There are many jealous bowlers that envy that style. If you want to be successful that is the way to go.
