need some help with ball weight
« on: March 25, 2005, 11:01:51 AM »
Ok, I've been bowling for about three years now.  I'm 14 years old and have a 190-195 average.  I throw a 13 pound ball right now but I don't get the carry I need.  I almost had a 300 but I left a solid 7 in the 11th after drilling the pocket.  I throw my 13lb. about 15-17 mph.  I was going to move to 14lb, but I don't want to buy all new equipment when I will be moving to 15 soon.  I was wondering if or when I need to move to 15lb.  Should I move up now or wait till I throw my 13lb. about 20 mph or so.  Right now I'm trying to get used to my 13 again because I'm throwing it much harder than I was and my backswing doesn't feel right.  I was wondering if moving to 15 would help my backswing get back to normal and if that would help my carry.  Thanks for the help.

Well we need some more info.  You say you're 14, but what is your height/weight?  At 14, I was really tall for my age (like 5'9" or 5'10") so the standards didn't apply.

it's really up to you, you know your body.  Do you think you'd be able to handle 15# equipment or would you be throwing way too slow or too hard for you?  I'd suggest getting a ball in 14#, throwing it for a while and see.  Then, you'll be able to tell if you could handle a 15 pounder, or just stay with 14.

Well I'm about 5'5 and weigh about 105.  I have thrown a 14 and I threw it about 15 or 16 mph, but even though my backswing felt better it still didn't feel right.  I used to throw a 15 like a year ago but I was stupid and could barely throw it.lol  But now a 14 feels kind of light I'm still jerking it on my backswing.  I don't know if I need to get used to it or go up to 15#

LL15 -- To check your ability to handle a 15 lb ball, use a cloth sling.  Find a 15 lb ball and put it in the sling, then swing it with your arm through both handles of the sling and your hand holding the sling tight to the ball.  You should be able to tell if it will be too heavy for you to handle.  --  JohnP

I'm not so sure about this method.  Check out this link, it's Ron Clifton's suggestion on proper ball weight selection.

From this, I assumed he wanted to eventually go to 15 lb and was wondering if he could handle the weight now.  I didn't mean to imply that 15 lb would carry better for him than 14 lb, but only to give him a way to check his ability to handle the 15 lb.  --  JohnP

Thanks everyone,

I tried a 14 lb. Inferno and loved it.  My first 3 games were 225, 218, 203.  I am going to move to all 14 lb.  I just ordered a Punisher and a Target Zone.
