Keep overthrowing
« on: March 29, 2017, 05:27:34 PM »
Do you all have any tips on on how to not overthrow the ball. I tend to get into the swing and force the ball back through the swing cause the ball to just skid or I chicken wing it. I'm getting much better but wonder if there are any mental tips you guys use to slow down and roll the ball

TIA

I'm guessing missing your intended mark to the left is what you mean by overthrowing the ball. (If you are a righty)

Try moving up on the approach about few inches and take shorter and slower steps.  Doing that drill for a couple frames helps me slow things down and get back on target when I start jerking the ball left of my mark.

I miss both left and right. When I get way too much I tend to miss right and top the all making it stay flat and then I miss left by just being out of sync. Now I don't do this every time but more often than not I try to force it. My lesson today really helped but the practice games after I was struggling some still.

I feel your pain. fumbled with this issue for years. did OK on the house patterns for many years. Decided to try the sport patterns, what an eye opener.
Decided I wanted to get better. went to multiple coaches.
finally met someone who got it, basically - to sum up my experiences, I learned the proper fundamentals, which in turn requires hard work, patience, practice, etc
So, if you want to get better (I assume so by you posting this) my advice is to learn about the game, read what you can, watch videos of the pros, plenty of great info out there.
seeking out a coach and getting yourself on video is less cost than a new ball.
After that, the rest is up to you

What helped me the most were 3 things:  Ball Fit, a good Coach, and practice.  Lots of practice.

The ball fit part was vital for me, specifically thumb pitch.  I would continue to grab and pull down on the ball from the top of my swing. My coach suggested that I add some forward pitch to my thumb. It took several tries/adjustments to get the thumb correct. Yes, this did frustrate me and took much practice to get used to having forward pitch. The outcome is that my swing and release are much more consistent. I am now able to adjust speeds more easily and attempt to play any part of the lane... although I'm still a work in progress  :)

I'm gonna have someone else blank slate still my next ball. I keep going to the same person and they all feel the same. Bowled league tonight and really struggled to find the right throw and feel. I think I have too much going on in my head and I'm overthinking it. I either lay really flat and have no break or pull it across my body. I struggle to focus on finding balance at the end of my shot.

Funny you mention this. In this week's email blast from BTM, there is a feature about the why and how of the unmuscled armswing, which is exactly what you're needing to get to, especially seeing that you find yourself forcing your armswing back.

I was going to ask about that and your timing, as the forced armswing and pulling the ball would mean that you're timing with your swing is off from your feet, meaning that you'd have to get the ball to catch up to your feet, causing you to pull left. But the BTM article may explain it better than I can.

I read the article. I liked it. Kinda opened my eyes. On Saturday I experimented and started opening my shoulders pointing my left arm and then rotationing my shoulders thru the swing. I created a lot more speed and rev without forcing my arm thru my swing. Is that normal? Lol. I'm going tomorrow night after work to practice some more. Hope to get some video up for you all. Is there anything else I should look out for?
