over gripping the ball
« on: March 09, 2015, 04:22:30 PM »
Need suggestions on how not to over grip the ball with my thumb.  Seems just as I release the ball I tighten my thumb which causes the ball to drag.

Assuming your span/fit is correct, you may need to use tape in your thumb hole to tighten up the fit.

some people use white tape in the front or back, or both front and back side of the thumb hole.

I use magic carpet tape in the back side and white tape in the pad side (front) of my thumb hole. this helps me stay in the ball longer while having a relaxed grip. But, I also have a fit that allows me to have a relaxed grip.

The gentleman at the pro shop says that just as my thumb comes out the first joint of my thumb flexes. Guess I played baseball and football too long. Maybe I just need to turn it into a cannon ball.

I may be wrong, but if your thumb hole is snug enough, you should not be able to flex your thumb.

I just recently stopped gripping the ball nearly as much as I use to. I have the turbo switch grip in my equipment with 4 different sizes to compensate for swelling (1-4 smallest to biggest.) immediately after I stopped trying to squeeze it, I noticed that the ball was just falling off my hand. I was using insert 3. I switched to insert 1 and put white tape in the front and I have been much more consistent ever since. Even with the weather getting warmer, I am not sure I will need my largest insert this summer because of the huge change in thumb hole size.

Fit weight or timing will all impact gripping
