14 or 15 pound ball?
« on: October 05, 2004, 05:13:59 PM »
I bowl with 14 pound balls, started bowling last year 135 avg.
one year later 190 avg. Someone told me that if I bowled with 15 pound balls
that I would carry more pins and improve even more, my question is what size did you start bowling with, what size do you use now and whats the difference between 14 and 15. thanks

If you are having no problems with 14 don't switch. I use 15 mostly but have some 14s either works you won't notice a difference.

boy are you confused. 14 or 15, in fact all bowling balls, are the same size.

Throw the weight that you are more comfortable with. with today's balls hitting as hard as they do, a 14 will carry as well as a 15.

the carry is is determined by many factors. I know some know it all will quote you a physics formula involving mass. it is invalid because it doesn't take into account the rotation forces and energy transference.

the single biggest thing to determine carry is, entry angle. ball rotation and axis tilt through the pin deck is next. your ball only hits 4 pins to strike, that is it. so use what ever weight that works for you.

Here you go.  Read this:

http://www.bowl4fun.com/ron/tip14.htm

If you're strong enough to use 15# comfortably, and you can pass Ron's wrist strength test, then move up to 15#.  You'll carry off-hits better (more pin action).

On solid pocket shots, it really doesn't matter, and 14# might actually carry better (better deflection, fewer stone 8's and 9's).
