Getting the feel of a new ball
« on: February 24, 2007, 03:21:30 PM »
I just recently started to bowl regularly, as in the past 2 to 3 months, usually 2 times a week. I was averaging about a 152 using a ball that was not drilled for my hand. Last week I purchased my own ball and I have played about 8 games on it. I was curious as to how many games some of you guys take before you truly get the "feel" of the ball as in how its going to react, etc. etc.

The biggest problem for a new bowler in understanding and geting used to a new ball has to do with the consistency of the bowler.
Is your release consistent? Are you accurate in hitting your mark? etc.
If you can be consistent, then trying different lines and watching the way the ball reads the lane, how it breaks, how it is finishing becomes easier.

To get to know a ball, you shoudl use it in different houses and on varying conditions. Personally, when I write a review posted here, I try to play the ball in at least 3 houses to see if the ball reacts similarly or if it bears suprises. All in all, I gues it takes me about 20+ games to say that I know how to use the ball and when to put it back into the bag. Nevertheless, it is a constant learning and control process, and there are balls that are easy to read while others seem to be puzzling...

Thanks for the responses guys. I put another 5 games on it yesterday, and I feel that I am starting to get the hang of the ball. About consistency, yesterday I paid way more attention to how I was releasing the ball, and exactly where on the lane I was putting it. So hopefully with a little more practice on it, I should be good to go.

Thanks again for all the response.
