I'm kind of new to the pin placement stuff.  I checked the FAQ section but it doesn't quite give me enough info about Pins.  When you're talking pin in  inches, is that inches away from the core, or how long the actual pin is?  Excuse my ignorance!!

pin length is the distance betwixt the pin (dime size disk on surface of the ball) and the center of gravity (cg).  The cg can be marked many ways.  Often it appears as though someone took a center punch and put a small hole in the ball.

short pin is considered 1-2 inches; long is 4-5".  Some blems have a 7+" pin...makes it hard to drill up.

in answer to your post subject, a long pin placed over the fingers tends to get a ball to go long the break hard at the end...good down and in shots.  the ball cover, however, is far more important for this shot.

A 4-5 inch pin means that the pin is 4-5 inches away from the CG.

Overhand is right. The pin-out ball will be best suited for a late, sharp reaction - betters uited for medium to dry conditions or when you can expect a dry/clean backend. A polished pearl ball with medium RG for example should be very versatile with this specs.

I would not recommend a solid or particle ball, or any ball with a sanded surface with this layout, since they tend to roll earlier and the pin-out might prove contra-productive.
