Back swing
« on: January 06, 2007, 01:45:36 AM »
I have seen professionals and some people lifts their arm higher than their shoulder during approach thus giving the ball more power. I have been practicing that but I have problem controlling the ball if I have such high back swing. My whole body becomes very unstable. I use a 15lbs ball. Any tips?

Last summer my coach worked on getting my backswing higher.  He said I was cutting it real short.  I didn't even realize it.   For me to get my backswing higher, I had to start the ball higher in my stance and then push it up and away at the start.  I too had trouble with control because I wasn't used the higher backswing.  The main trouble with changing the height of your backswing is the change in timing.  You feel unstable because the balls in a different place than normal in relationship to your feet.  For, me I had to really concentrate on my next to last step timing, and wait for the ball to reach it's full height before I went into my slide.
Ron Clifton at www.bowl4fun.com has some really good articles on this in his tips archives.
Good luck,

I disagree that raising the height of your backswing increases power. It definitely increases ball speed, which, depending upon the lane condition can cause your ball not to have enough time to react. True power is in the lift and rotation. In bowling jargon, it's called "hand." A smooth free backswing at a comfortable height, good follow thru at release and good lift (not loft) will improve your game and power at the pins where it counts with a side benefit of improving your accuracy. You can find more bowling tips and get some good advice on your game at: http://www.bowlingballsandmore.com . Ask the Bowling Wizard.
