The nooby questions
« on: October 17, 2017, 02:57:32 AM »
Hey all,
me again. I have a few questions about bowling. I play very much and train very hard to become better. But I need a little bit tutoring in a few points:
- Can somebody please explain me the mystical combinations between RG, Diff and Coverstock? I have read anywhere that specific combinations are good for specific lane conditions. For example, my balls are:
Timeless: RG 2.59 Diff 0.049
Vandall Destroy: RG 2.515 Diff 0.055
Rhino:
RG 2.54 Diff 0.03
Provided, all balls have the original surface. When choose I which ball?

- I am a 5.81ft (1.77m) 80kg man, throwing 14lbs. Should I switch to 15lbs? I notice there is a big difference in RG between 14 and 15.

- How do I choose a layout for a ball? Has anybody a link, where I can learn all about the layouts?

- Is there a good methodic to learn "reading the lanes"?

Thanks in advance!

Numbers can be deceiving but as a very general guide the lower the RG the sooner the ball stops skidding and starts reading the lane.  Larger diff generally causes more flare which usually means the more angular motion the ball will produce from the break point to the pocket. The lower the flare potential, the ball will yield more of a smooth arc motion on the back end of the lane assuming the cover stock is the same between balls.  The strength of the cover stock is a more dominant factor than the diff of the core though (70% coverstock, 30% core is general rule).

As for you other questions what I would do if I was you was find a very good bowling pro shop operator in your area.  They are experts on all this and best of all they can watch you bowl and determine things that hard for people on the internet to glean about your style.  In general though especially starting out the ball is less important than the operator and lessons are a better investment than more balls generally.  You have a good start on your arsenal already it sounds like though the Vandal and Timeless overlap some.  Eventually might consider a solid reactive that can handle heavier oil but again your PSO will be able to steer you to what you need.

One other thing I might recommend is it does cost money but bowlingthismonth.com is probably the best repository of bowling knowledge on the internet plus it has detailed reviews of most balls.  In general with your arsenal I would say start with the Timeless most times and if you find its too strong and you are having to move too far left (if right handed) or the ball is acting unpredictably at the end of the pattern or the ball is starting to leave 10 pins, ball down to your Vandal and if that it is too much go to your Rhino (keep in mind modern bowling balls are sponges that take oil off the lane as you and others bowl)  I would learn to use your Rhino as your spare ball if you aren't already and keep it polished.  Suggested surface on the others (and drilling on all) is going to depend on your rev rate and your speed and other factors thus why I mentioned about seeing a PSO.

Thanks all for the tipps and links!

Here are no "very good" pro shopper. Not even "average good" ones. E.g. I tested 3(!) Proshopper in my area for drilling. None of them was able to drill my balls correctly that  it fits. So I went to the next foreign country (Netherlands), where I found a very good and much cheapier pro shopper. Now I get all my stuff from him.
But I did not play with him yet, because the distance is much too far.

If you want just bowling tips, two that come to mind are:

http://bowlingknowledge.info/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1

http://www.bowl4fun.com/ron/roncarchive.htm

And a good link for bowling stuff is provided by our own Aloarjr:

http://home.earthlink.net/~litefrozen/index.htm

The grit chart and ball reviews links are recommended.

The bowling chat wiki site is here:

Ah ok sorry very American assumption of mine.  These guys have given you lots of good links and there is quite a bit about drilling discussed on this site as well.  You probably already know more than me as drilling layouts is not my thing much.  Can help you all day with surface management though.  Welcome fellow bowler.
