Behind the Ball and Lift
« on: May 18, 2007, 12:12:48 AM »
I'm kind of embarrassed to ask this very basic question, but here goes anyway.  Can someone give me an explanation of what is meant by (1) staying behind the ball, and (2) lift?  Or, can you you refer me to a good webpage that may explain these to me?  Thanks.

Lift = Motion the player transfers into the ball with finger-LIFT
... so the more lift one has... the more revs one can put on his ball...

Staying behind the ball... mhh... how to explain this...

you can position your hand more under the ball or more to the side of the ball... with the term "Stay behind the ball!" people try to tell others not to come around the ball or even over the ball too much cause this usually kills ball reaction.

for me staying behind the ball means giving the ball more forward roll than side roll (NOT coming around or coming over the ball!) when I position my hand more to the side I give the ball more sideroll getting an earlier and more even reaction.
Once I stay behind the ball the ball has more forward roll with a more snappier reaciton and also a stronger backend reaction.

So with hand position during the release one can tune the balls reaction.

But I was often adviced to stay more behind the ball to get a more consistend reaction and also a stronger backend pop with better carry...
and that is what I understand by the term "stay behind the ball"....

I think you need to watch a good power stroker in action in order to appreciate just what these terms mean.  When I observe them I can see what they're doing, but not see exactly how they're physically managing to do it.  I doubt I do exactly what they're doing.

Let's see if I get this right or not.  I may get corrected by more knowledgable and more articulate posters.  What I see is that the power strokers are able to keep the ball positioned such that at the release point their hand is behind the ball, their palm is under the equator of the ball with their fingers literally almost pointing straight down just prior to release.  Depending on how they want to ball to move, their hand can be anywhere from directly behind the ball to perhaps 4:30 o'clock (for a right hander).  During release their fingers come up the back of the ball from the bottom to the top.  This imparts incredible spin revs on the ball.

I suspect that in order to be able to do this well you need to be experiencing absolutely zero trouble with your fit, you can't be squeezing your ball at all, your thumb needs to be comming out of the ball cleanly without your having to think about it, and you need to be getting your arm down low at the line (like landing an airplane with little or no thump as your ball lands on the lane).

In any case, I stay behind the ball when I want it to go longer before it breaks.  I move my hand over to the side a little add a little cup with my wrist when I want the ball to start moving in sooner and with a smoother arc.  I suppose I could buy more balls and drill them differently to achive the same effect, but I prefer to (at least try to) alter my release instead.

here's a vid od some releases:
http://www.bowlingdigital.com/bowling/bld2/824
Those stay behind the ball imho

about (2) I can't really say... I "lift" my hand once I "feel" that my Thumb is out of the ball but timing is very important and I haven't managed to controll it so good now.
