Warm up
« on: April 26, 2007, 05:21:58 AM »
This may be a stupid question but what the heck this is the beginners forum:

I watched people getting loose for league and I've never seen one really warm up they just go out there and shoot a few practice shots. Also when people come in for practice during open bowling I don't see them doing anything before start of shooting. My back is very sensitive so is my thigh of the sliding leg so if I don't do something before I start bowling most of the time I pull one or the other - most of the time the thigh. But still I feel stupid doing stretching and stuff in the alley because I've never seen anybody else doing it.

So the question is should I feel weird when I start doing some excersize before bowling? Do you guys do something like this? If yes could you recommend some good stretching/warm up routies?

sometimes i will sterech for about 5 minutes or so before i leave the house. being relaxed = good bowling. being tense = frustrated bowling
--------------------
# of bowling balls = too many
highest game = not high enough
league avg. = its getting there
tournaments won = let me get back to u on this one

I will stretch before a session if I need it..  Usually stretch my legs first, then I hold a ball over my shoulder and stretch out the arm and shoulder..

I usually stretch in the squad room at Nationals too..

I get enough stretching lifting my beer up to my mouth before bowling starts.

Agreed, don't worry what others think. Get over that now.

We all have different bodies and require different things.

I stretch all the time. I do toe touches (stretches the back of the legs) 3 sets of 30sec. I also do quad stretches. Pull your foot up to your butt and hold for 30sec each leg 3 times. I also do wall stretch for the calves. Looking at the wall do a push up stance on the wall and put one leg futher back then the other with your foot flat on the floor. Each leg 30sec 3 times.

When I don’t do these stretches I start getting tight in the third game. I’ve also noriced I bowl better and feel more confident when I do these.

Good luck.

There is no way that you should not be stretching before bowling and for that matter ANY  spaort.  The last thing you want to do s pull a hamstring at the foul line.  Stretch before EVERY game regardless of the opinions of others.  For me it feels werid not to stretch before playing; ergo, I stretch out before EVERY game.  You will find out sooner or later, being the easy way or the hard way, that you must do this, especially if you are getting older.

i used to just go out there and throw till i was warmed up, but with college bowling and a lot more tournaments giving you just two balls on each lane ive been taking the time to at least get some leg streches and some arm streches in...sometimes i go far enough as to do some jumping jacks...anything to get me lose so i can get some good frames early

Ditto - a warm up is NEVER wrong, in any sport. Rather a professional attitude. IMHO, stretching is helpful in order to relax the muscles before the 1st shot, beyond injury prevention. Personally, I am also one of the few players around here who does some stretching of legs, arm, shoulder and hand/fingers before I toss the 1st ball. It has become an integral part of my routine on the lanes and helps me prepare mentally, especially in league and tournaments, because I have a feeling of being well-prepared. In the beginning I felt a bit strange, since I'd been the only one to do so - but I'd advise anyone to practice some warm up, just to avoid injury risks.

Thanks guys, most of the time I don't care what others think about me but I feel like people are watching me all the time in the alleys and it is funny sometimes that I do the stretching, put on my wrist brace, look for my starting point carefully then my first ball is like crap... I'm still learning the basics, I don't bowl in league yet but practice when there is open bowling.
