Was my ball drilled correctly?
« on: March 20, 2013, 02:25:27 PM »
Hey all,

I just got my first ball drilled last weekend; a DV8 Misfit Pearl.  Anyway, just wondering should the thumbhole always be perfectly split over the midline?  I'm asking because the person who drilled my ball has it about a few cm to the left.  It seems to be putting pressure on the left side of my thumb just when holding it down at my side, and also during my backswing.  FYI, I bowl right handed.

Thanks all

it's really tough to tell if a ball if fitted/drilled correctly over the internet.  There are so many things a ball driller will consider when drilling a ball.  I can say if you did your research of the local drillers and just didn't go to the cheapest guy most likely it's not a total hack job.

It sounds like he just drilled the fingers first.  Some ball drillers will drill the fingers first and most people have the ring finger to thumb longer than the middle finger to thumb.  Having the thumb look a little "offset" is typical when someone drills the fingers first.  Not saying that is exactly what he did.  But it does sound like it.  Personally, I always drill the thumb first so it is always positioned on the midline.  Visually it just looks better and to most bowlers "looks" correct.

If your span on both fingers is correct then it's correct.  You gotta remember that everyone's hands are not all the same.
As I measure hands it's quite often that the span is about 1/8" longer to the ring finger, BUT NOT ALWAYS...  The place to ask this question is at your pro shop.

Ok,
First of all it's a sphere we are dealing with. . . So optical illusions happen. If you were to draw the line back on the ball (grip mid and center lines) it may look different. On a separate note, if you're having pressure, you may have an issue with the fit. The pressure could be due to many things. Span, forward/reverse pitch or lateral pitch.

It may be an illusion depending on how you look at it. For example (very rough example at that)

This picture appears to have the ring finger raised.
Measurements from middle to thumb 4"
Measurement from ring to thumb 4 1/8"

Now this picture appears to have the thumb "offset" with the fingers on the same plane

Measurement from middle to thumb 4"
Measurement from ring to thumb 4 1/8"

I guess it depends on how you look at it.  Still has the same measurements though.

You may be right.  From storm's diagrams, I think I was looking at it as the second diagram.  I'll most likely bring it in for a fitting adjustment.  Thanks all.
