what ball should I get?
« on: November 13, 2007, 08:00:25 AM »
I bowl in the 160s and i put a decent amount of hook on the ball, i throw about 12-15 mph,and I would like a ball with a pretty nice hook, consistent line, works well on most oils, something I can handle, lasts a pretty long time, and something I can learn well with.

thanks for your posts I take all into consideration

Good entry level ball is the Tropical Storm line by Storm. These can be drilled pretty aggressive or mild. You need to speak with your pro shop guy and figure out the layout best for you though.

The Storm Jolt line is also a good starting point & not overpriced either.  Go on Storms Website & check out the balls on their links to each one's reaction line chart.  But keep in mind, like NicholasE says, you should check w/your proshop for drilling layouts that will work best for you.  Try to think of all your questions ahead of time & what you want the ball to do with the way you release your ball.  It might take a couple drillings or balls even, before you get it right.  So I would start inexpensively, then in a year or 2 go a little higher end.

i know this might seem weird but the way i spin the ball is i put 2 fingers in the ball not using the thumb hole and palm it with my hand and wrist and this could effect the ball i use, and is their a name for doing that

It's called a no-thumb release.  No real technical term for it.  Some people say it's fine.  I am strongly against it because it can be much much harder to be accurate without using your thumb, plus there is the possibility of putting extra strain on your wrist, which can cause damage over time.  Remember, more revs and more hook is not always necessarily better.

A good pro shop guy should take the time to watch you throw a couple times if you're going to buy a ball from him & have him drill it.  Especially if this is your 1st ball.  JMO.

ive bowled with 2 fingers before for about 6 months until i learned to bowl with 3 fingers. i agree it is more accurate. id say to try to bowl with 3. it wont have much movement right away, but it takes time to practice at it as does anything else will. maybe you can get lessons if you really want, i did and it really helped my game. just get the basics and how to adjust and your style will come along with you. not everyone bowls the same, just remember that.
