What causes a ball to roll out?
« on: December 29, 2007, 09:52:16 AM »
Hey everyone, long time troller, first time poster.

Picked up bowling during the summer to cure my extreme boredom in this small college town with not much else to do and found out I loved it.  However, as I've not been doing this very long, I'm still a beginner averaging about 150.  I've been starting lessons, but my coach (while a nice person) has missed 3 of my 5 lessons and is easily distracted.

For Christmas I picked up a new Hammer Cherry Vibe (my house is light oil/dry, and I bowl a second shift student league during the school year), but every time I throw it it does one of two things:

1.)  Starts hooking immediately, regardless of it's position on the lane and misses well left, or

2.)  Skids and rolls out, missing well to the right.

What causes it to roll out?  I throw about 13 mph from the center up the 3rd arrow with my old ball (my ball speed has been increasing, however, with this nicely fit ball), but I'm all over the place with my new one as I can't find any consistency.

Thanks to everyone for their help in advance.

What RicOh said.  A dry lane is usually going to cause a ball to roll out.

Thanks for the quick replies.  Is there anything I can do on my end to compensate?

I should add that this is my only ball that is fit to my hand, so I can't exactly go to another one.

I agree with Rico, shining the ball should reserve some of it's energy

Thanks Ric,

I was just enjoying you two pretending to like each other... See you next week Dale. You missed a rather busy day today at the asylum.

By the way, on topic, I agree that roll-out is usually due to friction too soon on the lane. The other advice given is very good.

BUT, make certain that it truly is ball roll-out and not just hitting carry-down.  Both make the ball quit, but are addressed very differently.  Let me know if you want additional information.  Have a good one.

No; I was there Thursday and Friday, notclay wasn't there Friday, and only half a day on Thursday, althought I have to admit Dopey was there all day both days, shocked me that's for sure, probably had something to do with it only being like 10 outside

I just thought I'd chime in on this topic, as I believe there's another point that needs addressing...

Your coach missed 3 out of 5 appointments? Are you paying him? Is the coaching supposed to be 1-1 with his/her time devoted to you (or are they practising at the same time?).

If you're paying for someone to coach you, then they should at the very least, turn up on time, and give you their complete attention (assuming that's the understanding you have) I'd have a polite word and bring up the fact that you'd prefer advance notice of lesson cancellations in future, as long as you explain it honestly, they should be receptive to your comments.

As for your ball rolling out, good suggestions from those above. If your ball speed is 13 at the pins, it's always going to be tricky to stop the ball rolling out on a drier lane (depends on revs too, of course).
Another option is to move left (assuming you're a right-hander), in search of oil to get the ball further down the lane, you might want to look around fourth arrow out to the same place as you're currently bowling.
