How to get more revs
« on: June 17, 2010, 11:19:25 AM »
I was bowling today trying some new things but I can't seem to get a lot of revs on the ball.  I don't think I get the proper spin on the ball when I throw it.  My ball does hook but I'm wondering if its just because I have a reign of fire.  Is there a certain thing I must do to get more revs on the ball?

Thumb out, fingers around.

Yeah I must not be getting my fingers around on the side of the ball.

Good timing is the basis, revs come automatically. As northface mentioned: getting the thumb out of the ball in time, so that you propel the ball out onto the lane at its lowest point in sync with your slide/final forward move is the most vital asset. Keeping the hand behind the ball druing the release is also helpful - just when the thumb is clear, you can start imparting revs with finger or wrist action.

But be careful not to oder-do it: revs CAN be forced, some think that a huge wrist support will make them big hookers. But unless your release with timing and mechanics remains poor, these revs are more or less worthless, because they tend to evaporate in spin.

I am still having trouble getting the correct rotation on the ball to throw a nice hook. I know it had something to do with my release.  I will just have to keep watching videos and see if I can figure it out.

Practice throwing underhand spirals with a mini football. Its that same motion.

I can get the correct rotation if I don't put my thumb in the hole, buit when I do I cant.  I'm going to keep working on it.  I'll try he mini football.

Sounds like some span/pitch issues or pinching in the thumb.

I think it has something to do with the timing of releasing my thumb from the ball.  Is the thumb suppose to come out on the downswing?

Ideal timing is to release the ball (read: let the thumb go) just a moment before the forward swing with the ball passes your sliding foot's ankle, right under your body's CG.

It is the lowest point of the swing path, and ideally you propel the ball out onto the lane in a flat plane this way. The ball will sting "hang" on your finger tips, and this hold creates the revs as you "follow through".
The thumb should not hold onto the ball beyond that point, because this really kills the shot, makes you come around the ball and top it, and creates needless loft.

Fixing this timing can be tough - I know it from personal experience. Sometimes it helps just to let the ball consciously go, until you feel familiar with it.

You might also check whether you bend forward at the waist at the foul line - this also promotes late timing and problems with the thumb. Keeping the upper body more upright might help here, too.
