and what is a typical house shot, I don't bowl in leagues but only on open lanes and they vary a lot in the amount of oil I see on my ball but most of them are dry. I assume THS is valid for league bowling. Is that right?

A typical house shot is one in which the oil is applied to the lanes not only to protect the lane finish, but to aid the bowler in getting his/her ball into the pocket ares.

An example would be if a lane is oiled with a high concentration of oil in the middle of the lane and the outermost parts of the lane being left dry.  With this type pattern, shots pulled into the middle of the lane will slide more to help the ball go straighter into the pins, while the drier outsides will tend to make a ball hook more in order to get errant shots back into the pocket ares.

Oil can alco be applied to differing lengths to aid this.  If applied in a christmas tree pattern, whish is oil in the middle/dry outside in an ever decreasing taper.  This also helps greatly in helping the ball reach the pocket area of the pins.

These are the conditions you find quite often for recreational leagues and open bowling.  Tournament conditions are generally tougher and aid the bowlers errant shots MUCH less.

Kyle,

There probably isn't any one correct quick answer to your question because for open bowling, you could be facing lane conditions from bone dry (last oiled a week ago) to a heavy long oil pattern that was put out for a tournament but the lane was not used for the tournament so you are the first to bowl on it.  That's not even taking into account that each bowler has their own unique style and each bowler's definition of heavy, medium and light varies.

For a quick answer, not knowing the lanes or your style, this might work:
If you are bowling on a fresh THS pattern, a medium oil ball (generally) should be good.  If you are open bowling after leagues on a THS pattern, a light oil ball (generally) should be good.

Someone else may offer a better answer than mine.

Have gotten a good referance point for the lane oil on the days that i go most often. I go wednesday afternoon before league so half the lanes are dry to light light oil and the other half are about light to medium. Friday and saturday nights for rock n bowl they scrape the lanes and hour before and reoil them so its usually a consistant medium. My gamebreaker 2 mvp can handle the medium oil but i want to get it to where thats jut my league ball for right now. I geuss overall im asking if you think a light oil ball would work without having to put a crazy layout on it. I do not know my pap and i don't want to use my gamebreaker because the proshop tech just drilled the holes center to the ball instead of letting me get my pap for the ball and having an appropriate layout. I bowl more of a cranker style with 2 finger no thumb finger tip. Gb is 15lbs and i move it at 15-16 mph with high revs. I tried to learn and do as much as i could do that i feel comfortable with and thats why im looking for opinions and advice.

I am not the best bowler to respond to your questions then.  I am a senior stroker with low ball speed and revs.  I think it best if someone else helped you with this as high revs and no thumb is something I am not familiar with.  :)

I think there were some rule changes about drilling/layouts affecting no thumbers so that may be why your driller kept the holes centered.  As a no thumber, if you have a thumb hole drilled, I think it is considered a weight hole so there are rules about your layout choices.  Best to let another no thumber or a driller or more knowledgeable bowler give you the correct answer.  I just wanted to reply so you didn't think you were being ignored by me.  :)

The rule change all it basically says is if your not gonna use your thumb you cant have a weight hole. I have a ball that is like that it has a thumb hole and a weight hole on the side and i put a ridiculos amount of revs on that ball but i use it for open bowl when my gamebreaker is killin me.

Oh i posted a new topic under ebonite. I said every 6 out of 10 rolls but its actually 1 every 5 or so anyway i need to get alittle more reaction on the backend without changing my stance or approach cause i set all my balls to that approach. I did somewhat side arm it so i know that threw it off but either way i need to change something and open to advice. The topic is need more on backend and there is a video with it.
