New Ball
« on: January 15, 2011, 03:09:12 AM »
I have been out of bowling 17 yrs just starting back using a 17 yr old rhino and would like a new ball with a little more action. I am carrying a 162 avg 16 lb ball and am getting older. Bowling in a house league and would like something that would work with different lane conditions any ideas?

I good middle of the road ball is the Roto Grip Nomad Dagger. It is fairly cheap is a true medium oil ball but works well on lighter patterns as well. If you wanted to go very cheap there are a huge number of "value performance" balls out there now. The Roto grip Dark Star and Riot are two. There is also the Columbia Freeze and the Brunswick Slingshot. All good balls. I do not have any direct experience with any of them but I personally like the look of the way the Dark Star rolls.

The Brunswick Anaconda is a versatile, smooth pearl reactive at a great price point. The Slingshot needs drier conditions for most. Locke mentioned the Dagger above, and so far it looks good, too.

I'd recommend going to 15 lbs for nearly all bowlers nowadays. The reality is that most bowlers will release the 15 better than they do a 16, which usually translates into having room on the lane. All balls from 14-16 lbs. have the same core. Best of luck to you.

I agree with Locke- the Nomad Dagger is an excellent ball on medium oil.  It actually was 1 of the first 2 balls I bought since I just came back to bowling after 12 years.  The Rotary Core is awesome, and it sends messengers like no tomorrow.  You just want to watch if its fresh oil because sometimes it can skid a little more towards the middle.  Outside, I had a great line and great predictability.  As the oil broke down a litlte bit, I definitely had more versatility inside as well.  Then again, the center I threw that at for the first time floods the middle of the lane lately.

Another great option already mentioned are both the Dark Star and Riot (Dark Star gives you more length with the pearl, Riot is more continuous with being solid.)  1 ball that is slightly stronger than both is the Rising Star, which I love to throw.  It's a hybrid cover, has been great on medium-lighter oil and the Neutron core in my opinion is excellent.  I've carried very well with it so far on pocket, off pocket hits, and if the ball checked a little high.

Between both the Dagger and the Rising Star, I found that I had to make very few adjustments to keep the same line, so that works very well.  Also, both balls have been performing really well according to my pro shop guy.  You can't go wrong with either.  Good luck to you.
