Bowling form progress
« on: April 02, 2009, 02:56:12 AM »
I put together a video showing my progress over the last 2 years.  The video starts with my form back in 2007, then some changes to my approach and release from last year (2008), and then most recently where my game is at as of this week (04/2009).

it's like night and day. i noticed in your 1st video, you were about 3-4' behind the line, i'm surprised you didn't foul on your shots. LOL. your updated one closer to the line and a good loft. smooth, nice follow thru. it does look like you've put in the time to get better. great job, i'll bet your scoring went up a little too.

Looks good.

I think you could get the ball into the swing a little sooner.

looks good, u used to look like u were sneaking up on the pins, now u got good tempo and swing speed but as baboon said i think also u could get the ball into the swing just a lil sooner. but again do also what feels comfortable.

I liked the path of arm swing better in the first set of videos but it wasn't as fast and fluid as now.  Also not keen on people finishing back 3 to 4 feet from the foul line and clearly you've fixed that.

Then the second set of videos all of a sudden you had a major bump out in your armswing....inside loop going back them a bump out say 4 inches and then slightly outside in downswing in relation to your body lines....still much more speed than the first set and fluidity.

Finally a swing almost in real good line going back then a very slight bump ourside as you start your downswing....say 1 inch or two.  A still slight outside in path in relation to your body alignment at release.

I did not check your stats except I'm guessing about 205 before looking.

Comment....I've know one 220 plus bowler who bumped outside at the transition from backswing to downswing.

In general I think you've improved a lot in some important ways but can't figure out how the slight bump out from backswing to downswing got in there..

REgards,

PS premier hand position during the backswing thru much of the downswing!  With the hand inside the ball.  Maybe a slight bit of quick turn at the bottom...now we're splitting hairs....

Thanks for the feedback everyone.  I appreciate the comments.

With regards to my late timing, I've really spent a lot of time working on this.  I find that when I start my push away in my second step I get into the swing so early that I feel like I'm running to the line to catch up with the ball.  I realize it could feel this way because it's just different than what I'm used to, but it certainly doesn't feel natural.  I guess if it doesn't feel right, then I'm probably doing it right.  It's something I definitely need to work on.

I am definitely happy with my release and my distance to the foul line now.  I used to have problems rolling over my thumbhole and being 3 - 4' away from the line, as you can see.  I even used to roll the ball on the approach in front of the foul line.  Now I'm about 2-3" away from the line and I'm a good inch+ from my thumb.  But as with everyone's game, the release is even now still a work in progress. and bowlingnut was right, i did sneak up on the pins, my friends even called me the Elmer Fudd of bowling.

LuckyLefty, thanks for the great feedback!  I know exactly what you're talking about with the bump out.  I've really been struggling lately with clearing my swing path.  I tried the whole "walk left" idea, I tried stepping right foot in front of left on the second step to clear my hip out of the way, but the result has become my body almost contorting into a banana shape which causes some irregularities in my swing path.  I'm now getting back to walking straighter to the line but need to find another way to open my shoulders for the swing rather than this walking left issue.  At one point I was drifting 8-10 boards left on my fourth step.

I'll try and continue updated videos so that anyone else who can related to what I'm working on will have some visual guides to help them.

Thanks again everyone!
