all videos the same
« on: February 14, 2014, 07:40:09 PM »
Why is it all the videos strike and all balls are the best and the greatness. I have bought 5 new balls this year. 900 global roto grip radical and storm. Bowl on wood lanes 50 years old and 8 lane center. Wish I bowled at big center and ths. Why don't they show every shot they throw.

They're trying to sell the ball, that's why.  If they showed the bad shots, it wouldn't get hyped :)

Why can't they be honest. My network is ok at best on 50 year old lanes and older lane machine. The owner is 75 years old and don't understand the ths.

No one wants to see videos of a ball going face, missing the pocket, leaving splits ect. They want to see the motion of the ball and it hitting the pocket. The conditions your bowling on anything entry to mid level would probably be all that is needed along with a great ball sander for resurfacing often.

Kinda like watching a commercial for a new sports car sitting in traffic. No one cares.

Trucker,

Honestly I stopped relying on ballreview video's to buy a ball..  the only time i've ever gone OMFG i am so going to buy this ball... Is when the 811c/t came out..  And it was the Mike Fagen video he did on the ball, the ball motion was so different that i had to get this ball, and it's always in my bag.

As for you bowling in a 8 lane house with old wood lanes and a NON-ths..  you are lucky!!!!   idk what your average is, but i would guess when you go else where to bowl you are always above average..

As for new balls and such, in your environment, i doubt you need the newest and lastest n greatest thing since sliced bread..  balls such as the 300t,A,C line from Track and Slingshot / ringer from brunswick and Tropical Heat/ breeze line from storm will do just fine for you..

if you do get a new ball, it would probably be best when you get it drilled, to go out of town to a different place to bowl and see how the ball reacts..

Now as for these ball review video's  when they are always striking...  my thoughts are if these guys are so good.. why are they not out killing all of the regional tournaments and such??  or why are they only known for their ball videos??

Yes it would be nice to see them do a full game video or to actually show the ball on a fresh shot and then in game 4 or 5, with 5 other guys playing on the lane..  but that would be asking way too much..

Aside, Walter McKnight, who does video ball reviews, throws it good, but struggled at the masters, so I can see your point.

Obviously they want to make the ball look good, but honestly it's because you can see true ball motion the best when a good shot is thrown.  Yes, everyone would like to see how the ball reacts on bad shots, but if you're looking harder at how well the ball bails you out on bad shots than how it reacts on good shots, you're focusing on the wrong things.  Also how the ball reacts on bad shots has more to do with your ability to play the lanes and read ball reaction than the ball itself, but I digress.

Yes it does serve a marketing purpose as well, but it's harder to get a good read on the ball motion if you're wading through inconsistent shots.  A lot of people especially can't see when a shot that doesn't strike was a ball issue or an operator issue.  They throw the best, most consistent shots to take the bowler out of it as much as possible so you can accurately see the ball reaction.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

I think people might want to see shots that are a little off mixed in.  On a shot that's a little wide or slow, does it jack knife for a big 4 or only leave a 4 pin?  On a shot that's a little firm or inside, does it read the lane enough to leave a flat 10 or never read the pattern at all?  Remember, a great majority of bowlers do not average 220.  We're going to make our fair share of bad shots and want to see how the ball reacts in those situations.  I know most videos are made to sell balls.  That's why it's good to have average bowlers make videos to go along with the pros.  Of course, no one wants to see a ball that's thrown poorly and saved by a souped up house shot either.

I remember "sawbones" saying the same thing about bowling videos....the ball doesn't go on the same board but strikes, etc.....

Here's an idea...

why not make videos like how BTM does their review. i.e.....Take your high end ball and bowl on light, medium, broken down, and heavy oil patterns. at least two extremes... I know it'll be difficult to have the lanes set up with different patterns, but it would be nice (for Joe Bowler) to see how a ball like a Zero Gravity would do on dry.  You say the ZG is not meant for dry? well most all of us here on BR knows that, but everybody else at league don't.

But with bowling itself, you can only do so much with videos IMO....Plus it's a lot of work. So to the people that put out vids for the rest of us, thank you....

The whole idea behind a ball video is to see how it reacts.  Most people video on a THS because that is the most common.

Why do they only film strikes?  Because we already know what balls look like missing the pocket.  I buy a ball because I want to see it strike.  By watching the video you can see where they are having to play on the lane to strike.  You can also see what kind of area they have because most of them do miss on occasion.

I typically watch multiple videos of the same person with different balls to get a feel for how the one I'm interested in reacts.  Even if I don't throw it like the guy in the video, I can still get a relative comparison.

Same reason car companies don't show their car hydroplaning and hitting a wall.  They want you to see the optimum way it drives, drifting around corners and sliding into parking spots.  Not the way you drive while texting on your phone and eating donuts before you rear end someone.

Matt you are lucky guy. That's awesome to have your own lanes. The alley theme is great. The video on the zero gravity is great.Slow motion really is nice. Also you throw the ball great. You post your shot nice.If I had those 2 lanes ,My local lanes which are dumps would never see me.

I have been saying basically this for a while too. While I understand you want to show the ball at it's optimum, you want it to look it's best to sell it, to promote your brand, etc etc etc. But show the limits of the ball. Show what happens when you miss right, show what happens when you miss left, etc. And this can't be done on THS. Every ball looks great on THS. Videos really should be done on tougher patterns. That being said, it doesn't have to be Shark or Bear (I think that is the 52 ft one, lol), but how about USBC Blue (which I think is the harder of their "THS" versions). Then you can really show the ball doing what it's supposed to do, especially for the high end balls.

Dogtown, I don't see how your theory helps you. By doing what you are doing you can get an idea of relative strenght of balls, maybe. Being filmed on a THS though it can show a lower end ball hooking almost the same as a higher end ball....that doesn't mean it will for you. But saying you look to see what line they are playing?!? Even on THS, the actual topography of the lanes you bowl on could greatly change the reaction of the ball. Unless you are bowling on the exact lanes they filmed on, their line won't mean anything for you. You don't throw it the same way as the tester (probably), your lanes don't react the same way as the testers, and your house probably doesn't oil the same way as the center they are testing at. If you want to see what type of motion you can expect, it might help with that a little, but it is still muted somewhat by THS. And to your car reference.....they don't have an everyday Joe driving those cars either. They hire professional drivers/stuntmen/racers to film those commercials. So just because they can make the car hug the corner at 90 MPH, doesn't mean you can do it too. Most people I know, don't buy a car based on the commercials....so why should people buy a bowling ball based on a video?

Like cars most people don't buy a bowling ball for the video. The video only confirms what the bowler is wanting the ball to do.

"I typically watch multiple videos of the same person with different balls to get a feel for how the one I'm interested in reacts.  Even if I don't throw it like the guy in the video, I can still get a relative comparison."

I think dogtown makes a great point here.

Many centers more times then not dont put out sport conditions on a regular basis. Most bowlers are buying the ball for their THS they see. Id say seeing any ball on a walled up THS is going to be fairly close to what the average bowler is facing.

Its all relative to what you want it to be. Watching PBA players throw a ball on PBA patterns does nothing for me. Its a pattern I will never face.
