Bad Release - Please HELP!
« on: June 25, 2008, 11:06:51 AM »
Ok sorry to "make" you all watch this atrocity but I am at wits end on how to stop coming around the side of the ball too early before release.  I have always tracked high, but over the last 6 months this crap release has invaded me and has left me with reduced carry and a lot of what might have beens.

I have lost the ability to bring the ball back from anywhere.  The ball goes out and basically rolls out... I have no tilt or wicked messengers that I miss so dearly. I have no transition from the initial roll to the roll after the break point.  I KNOW I am coming around the ball too early.  I NEED your help with some pointers on how to stop it.  PLEASE HELP!!

It doesn't look like you're turning especially early, just over turning it a bunch.  Try leading with the ring finger and come straight up the back of the ball.  Think Walter Ray, maybe even his end over end no rev spare shots.  Even if you try to over exaggerate it, it might be what your looking for.

The technique I have been teaching to some of the local youths who are just getting into using a fingertip ball is very simple and straightforward....

instead of trying to make the ball hook and turning your wrist over etc just use your palm to push the ball down the lane. Afterall think about it...you want the ball to go down the lane so why are all of us trying to throw the ball DOWN the lane with our hand on the SIDE of the ball???? Talk about being counter-productive...

just a thought.....

Hmmm, it looks fluid, but from the single shot things are hard to find out.
But what also caught my eye is your "looping" hand and arm movement - you seem to put much effort into the ball's revs, and you probably overturn/over do it.

Do you know your PAP, or, alternatively, how does your oil track on the ball look like? Does it show intersections in the thumb area and on the opposite side, or does it look like a kind of spiral?
I think that through your current release, the ball rather spins with much side rotation, but does not (get to) roll.

What to do? First of all, relax, and let the ball guide your arm pendulum. You do not need muscle or that weird arm movement to put revs and speed on the ball, let gravity work for you.
Additionally, I'd suggest the others already suggested: try to lead or push the ball with your ring finger, forward towards your target on the lane. Make sure your thumb gets out of the ball when the pendulum reaches your ankle area, and let the ball "roll" over your fingers. Just then, curl your fingers and maybe turn the wrist clockwise, but do not make this movement with your complete arm - make sure your follow-through is straight. Leading your hand to your right ear ("release the ball - answer the phone") helps a lot to keep things straight.

All these elements promote a free release that lets the ball do what it was designed and drilled for - skid, hook and roll. When you overturn and force it, it will hardly finish well in the pins, and I think that is what you witness right now.

Godd luck, though, easier said than improved

If you want revs, keep your hand in a strong position (ring/middle fingers around 6-8 o'clock) but come straight up the back of the ball. You don't have to turn the hand/wrist to achieve this. In fact, you'll probably gain quite a bit more revs in the process. Just remember to stay relaxed and not force it.

I've heard this example used before:  think about how you would throw a football underhanded to get a spiral.  Same basic concept for hooking a bowling ball.  It's about getting your fingers to come up from the bottom of the ball.  It's NOT about trying to spin it or coming around the top of it.  The revs come from the motion of your fingers going from the bottom and up through the ball.  Worry less about hooking the ball and more about rolling the ball and it should make it a lot easier to not over-turn the ball.

What else have you changed that MIGHT be causing this release!?

Grip span?  Pitches, spans, where you stand?  Timing?

LL

nothing physical changed... I believe i bowled on some tight lane conditions for a few weeks and kinda closed down my release to control the ball and become more accurate... then i got stuck in that mode.

hmmmmmm... Ok....

I like what Doug and Dan said...  Kinda gonna go from there.

Your upper body lean is not necessarily too much, but the direction of it is not productive.  You appear to ball tall and lanky.  Nice loose swing, use your height and length to advantage.  Try to get your upper body over your knee, not leaning out away from your center.  (I think where Absolute was going)  Your left arm can help you with this, get it out there, use it as a lever for balance.

Don't try to grab it so much at the bottom.  Spiral the football thing.  Come through with the palm of your hand towards target, even open handed.  Think about the inside of your elbow coming through your target.  This will help keep your follow through right of your head.

You got good basics.  Love you long, skinny guys, you can get power and leverage that us short, chubby guys can only dream about.  Keep working, it will happen.
