BOUNTY AND MANIAC VIDEO!
« on: November 02, 2008, 08:58:51 AM »
The latest 900 Global equipment -- with more Bounty footage than Maniac footage simply because I was far too enamored with the Bounty's reaction. The Bounty is drilled with a modified Rico layout (similar to my Break Solid) and the Maniac is drilled 4x3, with a large x-hole 1 inch down from my PAP. The Bounty has high gloss, "Beans Secret Sauce" polish, while the Bounty was left OOB (1000 Abralon). Bounty is simply too much ball OOB for most conditions I encounter. Can you say, "strong"?

Lanes were older synthetics with a fresh, heavier volume house shot. Sorry, no sport shot -- most people, anyways, just bowl on house conditions.

Compared to my Break S75, the OOB Bounty is slightly less angular but more hook overall. A very nice, versatile piece, which takes cover changes well (as evidenced by my high gloss polishing). The Maniac fits easily between the AMF Code and the 900 Global Creature Solid. It features a nice midlane roll and a similar backend reaction to the original Code, IMHO. Not a lazy backend move, by any means, but nothing too strong.

I only had limited testing and video shooting time today, but I will keep everyone informed as to these two balls and probably shoot some more footage around Thanksgiving.

Enjoy:

They are probably really great balls, but, why do we need two new balls that hook so much on a heavier volume of oil that they need to be thrown from in front of the ball return ( on the right hand lane or righties, left hand lane for lefties ) over the third arrow on the opposite side of the lane?

Not trying to be sarcastic or demeaning, its just that I wonder why anybody needs, or wants, a ball that is that strong and makes you play that deep on a fresh, heavy volume shot, especially since you say the BOUNTY was already at a high gloss finish?  What happens when the heads burn up and go away?

I am not sure that most of the bowlers in the average house need anything this strong. I for one have seen both with polish and they handle normal THS just fine.  That being said I would love to see a S15 or F15 coverstock with a real core, maybe even the Maniac core would be nice. Might just find something for toasted lanes, and or bowlers with lots of hand or forward roll.

Well, I'll be perfectly honest -- I largely agree with you. That line isn't by any means my ideal line, and if I was really trying to score (i.e., in a tournament setting) I'd probably rather grab a weaker ball and play further out. That being said, I didn't have a bad line with the Bounty.

I make the videos to show off the new balls and what they are capable of. For a bowler with less hand, the Bounty would be a superb choice, creating more area on the lane than they might be used to. Do I necessarily agree with the need for super hooking equipment? No. But then again, I'd be a strong proponent of one ball -- a rubber one -- on wood lanes against wood pins. Will that happen? No. The game has changed, for better or worse.

That was sort of what I was thinking as well.

Yeah, I guess your right, but that BOUNTY sure is a LOT of ball, and I don't think I would EVER see enough oil to use it, not even highly polished.

But, then again, I see guys every week throwing "hook monsters" right up the track while I am trying desperately to get a ball to just clear the heads without checking up early.  To each his own I guess.

Well, I'm with you, trying my darndest to push the ball through the heads. If anything, I've been forced by virtue of my game and other peoples' games (burning the $HI# out of the track area) to learn how to consistently play that deep (like in the video). Recently, though, I've even toyed with the idea of completely taking hand out of the ball and just fudging it most of the time (I wrote an article in BTM about this point last year). Like I said, I think the sport was a hell of a lot better in the 1920s-1950s, before any technological advancements, but everyone -- you, me, everyone -- must learn that that era isn't coming back. It's sad, and it's why I spend time researching the era and writing about it whenever I can, but it's the truth. Since that's the case, I'm not going to sit complaining -- I'm going to throw the equipment I think matches up to my game the best (which would be 900G and AMF stuff mostly, with a little Roto and Visionary thrown in at times) and just try to play the modern game the best I can.

The reason why all ball company's are making stronger bowling balls is to appeal to the "average league bowler" and that average is 170's.  Everyone out there in the bowling world doesn't have a ton of rev's or even know what moves to make.  So the market dictates what the company's make.  That is why we keep seeing stronger and more hooking balls coming out.  Think about it? What is the percentage of classic, scratch or sr house (whatever you may call them in your area) in a given house?  Maybe 1 or 2?  Just my two cents...
