Looking for help with my game...(video)
« on: April 23, 2007, 07:58:54 AM »
Alright, I have been working some of the larger kinks out of my game, but quite a few still remain... I know there are a few knowledgeable folks on this site, and I was hoping you could give a different perspective, and help me further my game... So critique away, constructively of course... It's just a couple of shots from practice, good and bad, so you can see my real game, not a 300 average superstar lol. If you were wondering, the balls used were Full Tilt when I had the blue shirt, and when it was red I was using the G Force Nebula on the left, and Big Shot on the left.

You look good. You may want to try relaxing your hand a little more at the bottom of the swing and just rolling it. Wait until the ball gets to your leverage window before you do anything to it. It looks like you want to really get the ball at the bottom. This will increase your accuracy and your ability to repeat shots. Everything else looks super.

Thanks, I see I dont have that play at the top of my swing when I throw at spares(I usually throw strait at all of them) so I would assume that means I am trying to hard somewhere..?

I don't see anything wrong.Except the arm swing which cause the ball go out.It could be also your ball speed as well not the same every time on your first shot. When Bob Benoit bowl a 300 all of his shots were within .2 of 19mph.If you work on hitting your mark within 2-3 boards of your target where your ball is going. And also work on the speed if someone can time the ball leave your hand to the time it hits the pins.
I hate ten pins but love the game of bowling with just the right ball to take them out.

Looks pretty good to me.  I sure wish I could get down like that.  Overall you look pretty smooth, but at the same time show a LOT of effort in my opinion.  I think you may become more accurate if you could loosen up a little particularly at release.  Of course, your game is VERY different from mine.    My only complaint about the vid is I wonder if you always hook at your spares like that.  It might work fine on the average THS, but you might regret trying to do that on tougher sport shots or tourney conditions.

I do try alot, that is the main thing I have been working on. I think I have come a long ways from even a week or 2 ago, but it's not going to happen over night... That being said, that's the #1 thing I work on every practice, less effort, smoother at the release. And no, I don't usually hook at spares. Excluding the pocket or a 5 pin, I throw strait at everything during leagues and tournaments. I did notice that my ball speed varies alot, but that may be from the trying to smooth it out? maybe it will be a little better once I get my swing to the point that I like it? I don't know lol. I also noticed that sometimes I randomly push a shot a bit here and there, but it feels like it shouldn't have happened... What would cause that? More arm swing problems?

A muscled swing would do that.  Variances in ball swing are a direct result of a muscled swing as well, most likely.  I think it's the bottom of your swing that's the problem.  In practice I'd work on really babying the ball at the bottom, be as gentle to it as an egg and see what happens.

to me it looks like all of your momentum is stopped and you're now using your arm for speed. Also what i noticed is you go from faster to slower which should actually be slower to faster in your approach. Thats why it forces you to play really deep.

You've got it all wrong... I bowl on the correct side, I'm just one of the few righties smart enough to jump over to the "smart mans" side Ask anyone that knows me, I write, golf, swing a base ball bat, and a bunch of stuff right handed, but I do the stuff that counts lefty

Your body is too open at the foul line. When you are beginning your approach, move your feet (clockwise or counter-clockwise) until the center of your chest is pointed at your target. With a nice, loose, free swing, you should find yourself being alot more consistant.

This might just be me i can see what everyone is saying. One of the biggest things that I could see is your foot work. You start slow, pick up and try to slow down at the end. Also your 3rd and 4th steps are so much shorter then the rest of your steps. If you were to make your steps more even in spacing it will help with timing. THat is just my thoughts on it because I used to do the same thing with my feet and after I fixed that things started to come together better.

Ahhhhhhhhhh another lefty, it's OK we will se what we can do anyway.

What i noticed is that when you are at the bottom of the swing and just before you let go, you tend to getting a whipping motion with your wrist, which could be why it looks like you are getting faster with your arm swing. Also, the first shot in the video looked really nice, eveything looked smooth. To me after that there were little things about each other shot.

The one thing I would say about your setup is to try and close the shoulders just a little more.

In the grand scheme of things though you look pretty good.
