Please suggest a Camcorder?
« on: December 25, 2010, 04:11:14 AM »
My GF is buying me a camcorder for a x-mas gift, so I can record myself bowling, in order to improve my game and to send them out for coaching responses. Which would you guys who have posted vids recommend?

Anybody (who is currently or have taken videos) can give me a suggestion? We are going tomorrow to check some after-xmas sales.

Those will work.  Easy and cheap.  Decent quality.  Ask yourself though if your gonna do any video editing or not.  A good video editor is a plus.  I was using an old dvd camcorder to record vids, than used Sony Vegas Movie Studio to do the editing.  I believe that's what I used.   Haven't done any vids yet with the new Cannon camera my wife has.  It records in HD so can't say there as to how good it is.  I myself was looking to get one of the Sony HD camcorders, but haven't taken the time to look at them.  New job, and the 5yr old gets all the attention lately with the holidays.  No time to go and practice.

I agree -- Flip video is easy to use and easy to carry.  It is not much bigger than a mobile phone.

Thanks for the replies! As far as playback quality, are you satisfied? For coaches, they can pick out aspects of the release clearly?

Something to look at on any camcorder is the frame rate. the faster the frame rate the better the slo-motion play back will be.
So if looking at Flip see the Flip Ultra HD (the 8gb/2hr one) it does 720p HD at 60 FPS plus has image stabilization.

I'd also get a little mini tripod so you can sit it on the approach to film your release from the side.

Update you might look at the Kodak Zi8 I think it will beat out the flip. It will do 1080p, plus you can get 60fps at 720 and it comes with the extra cords and such.

You can see the video quality of the Flip Video Ultra HD in my Wicked Siege video review (in profile).

I went on the cheaper side.  Going with the DXG 567 pocket camcorder.  Records in 720p.  A shooting buddy used one on one of his trips and it looked pretty darn good for the price.  I'll have to shoot some vids and give a review.  It was released a few years ago, but may be handy to just carry around and slap on a mini tripod to record same lane time and family outings.  I didn't want to spend alot of money, already have a Sony camcorder, but wanted something I could carry in my pocket and tote around.
