Form help
« on: January 22, 2014, 05:37:49 PM »
Does anybody see what would be causing my slide foot to cross so far to the right of my body during my slide? How can I fix this? It is killing my consistency. Also, if anybody sees anything else that needs improvement, please let me know. Please ignore the audio in the video. I had people with me that were joking around after league during the video.

It's normal to have your slide foot go towards the center of your body for balance purposes.  If you're trying not to "drift" to the right throughout your approach your right foot is likely the culprit.

Each step with your right foot should be directly in front of the other; like walking on a balance beam.  When the right foot and leg are "out of the way" it also clears an effective path for the arm swing (to fall under the shoulder).  Think of the center of your body as your CG and the closer you keep the feet and swing to it the less effort and "manipulation" required to maintain balance and leverage.

I would shorten your first (left) step dramatically, too.  Hope this helps.

You are the opposite of all the slow hook guys that drift 20 left to walk around the ball return.

You bowl at a place with above ground ball returns.  You drift far enough right and with slide with your right leg behind so you don't kick the ball return.  Your body is doing what it needs to do to protect itself.  The first step would be to take video on the left lane to see if your drift is the same and your balance is better, then go from there.

To me it looks like you start straight up then when you start your backswing you start to dip down and lean to the right. Your shoulders looked pretty square to the lane  so I would start squatting a little when you start so you are at the same height as when you finish you swing. Hope that helps

Itsallaboutme is right. The body is doing what it needs to not hit the return. With the return in the way you can't get enough knee bend for proper leverage. It forces your body in a more stiff leg position which makes you loft the ball out on the lane. This may be causing your inconsistency in ball reaction. It causes the ball to have different reactions. I would concentrate on trying to make your release consistent and keeping your right left planted on your release. Other than that, it looks great considering your next to the return.

Thank you for all of your input. I drift the same at this house on both lanes. I don't know if I drift as much to the right at the other house with different ball returns. I tend to have to play more up the right or tighten my lines at that house. I never play as deep as I was playing in this video, but I wanted to practice the fourth arrow area. The further right I play, the less I drift with my slide foot I think. Because of this, throwing my Misfit Pearl up the 12-13 board at the arrows is my money shot

A friend has a similar "problem" (not sure it's actually a problem for him). SInce I bowl with him, I know why he does it but you seem to be doing something similar and your explanation above puts more credence into what I thought was the reason you do it also.

Since you more usually play an outside line, it might be your body's way of counteracting what your brain is telling it to do in order to play a 4th arrow shot. Your body knows you throw closer to a down an in shot and it's trying to insure you do that but forcing the slide to the right. It's an almost subconscious thing: Kind of like our body saying it's fixing something it believes you're doing wrong.

You might trying setting your slide step in the approach before taking the first step. Visualize where you want to slide, set your body's angle toward that spot and keep your eyes focused on your target. This idea helps me throwing straight plastic at left side spares because I normally play deep and have an inside out swing.

You drift less as you play further right because you are already far enough away from the ball return.

Your slide drifts right so you don't fall on your ass since your right leg is behind you and not further left acting as a counter balance.  The right leg behind you also keeps your hips from clearing out of the way.  So the slide goes right, closer to being under your head.  If it didn't you would fall off the shot more than you already do.

OK thank you! I will take all of your comments into consideration and post another video soon to see if I made any improvement. I am sure I can fix this, even taking the ball return into consideration.

I'd agree with itsallaboutme.  There are several things your brain does subconciously try to control, or at least influence, and staying away from the ball return would be one of them.  We've got above ground ball returns at one house too, though the ball return itself sits back off the approach, and it's a real trick trying to get deep on the right lane.  I'd support what he said.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

I have a "money 10 pin spot" that I stand when throwing at the 10 pin. If I can stand in that spot, I will hit at least 9/10 ten pins. In the other house, the ball return is in that spot on the right lane. I hit MAYBE 5/10 of them on the right lane, even moving up on the approach. I am seriously considering picking up a plastic ball and seeing of that will solve the problem. I take a lot of hand out of my 10 pin shots, but there is enough that I can still hook off of it at times while throwing my aggressive stuff

Offtopic here, but which alley is this at? Just by the fact that you have above ground ball returns tells us it's a good classic house, but also the fact that the lanes more than likely are wood and not synthetic.

Those are a rarity nowadays, especially with the above ground ball returns. I've only seen three in my life and bowled at one. Where is this one at?

I tried "walking the tightrope" tonight. It removed my terrible slide foot and made me much more consistent! I only threw one game, but I feel it made a huge difference. Thank you
