Hammer Taboo Spare
« on: November 23, 2011, 04:16:09 AM »
Here's a vid/mini-review of the new Hammer Taboo Spare.

First off, the house I bowl in puts out a 36ft house shot(so the owner says).  The lane surface is Brunswick Anvilanes.  The footage was taken on a fresh pair, with no open bowling whatsoever on it.  Each shot on the film were in succession of one another, leaving in the bad shots with the good.  I also put in a few shots of the Nuts Pearl, and OMG Pearl to see how I would've played the lanes if using those balls.  Those two balls are 1-3 out of the bag in my other 3 leagues, with the Raging Bull Charged being #2.

For comparison sake, during the summer I played the same line as the Taboo Spare in the video with a Seismic Euphoria, and 3-1 left of it with a Double Clutch Pearl.  After I shot 300/800 with the Double Clutch Pearl during the summer, he changed the shot, and than again changed the shot, and so on, until finally ending with what is in this video.

Lately, I've been trying to use a 1980s, Urethane Roto Grip Outlaw.  I had a decent look, with about 3-5 boards of more hook than the Taboo Spare, but couldn't carry the corner pins for the life of me.  After taking a look at the Taboo Spare, I felt like with the added core, that my carry would be alot better.  So far in league, only 1 ten pin, and scores of 231, 210, and 209.  Carry was improved, and I felt alot better about the Taboo Spare than I did the day I shot this video.

Enough of the jabbering, here's the link to the vid

I usually use a tripod, but since my son broke it, I moved the table over and set the camera on top of it.  Zoomed in a bit, and let it rip.  The wife unit was in charge of the record button.

I was gonna film the Nuts Pearl, OMG Pearl, but didn't feel like playing that deep and decided to just film the Taboo Spare.

Good video, but it makes me wonder if I should drill mine at all.
I expected a little more pin action given your rev rate, slightly more than mine but not by much.
A friend I bowled against last night used his Storm Soccer ball with a similar rev rate to yours and got similar amount of hook and slightly more pin action. But we bowled on AMF HPL synths which have more friction in absolute terms than Anvillanes but it was just about as dry as yours was in the video.

Got me worried now .

Nice release, by the way, Gunny.

How do you feel about the Taboo Spare now?
And have you thrown any of the current urethanes, polished like the Taboo Sp is (2000 + polish)??

charlest,

I, like you expected a little bit more out of the ball during the filming of the video.  But it was a fresh shot, and not a broken down condition, nor was it a short pattern like the Hammer video.  But on my Tuesday mens league, come third game the outside was beat up pretty good.  I pulled out the Taboo Spare after opening in the 1st and 2nd frame, and peeled off the next 5 strikes, with the last two sending the messenger to take out the ten pin and 9 pin both times.  I did leave a stone 9 and a high flush 4-9.  This was at a different house, so a bit more friction down the lane than the anvilanes.  Did manage to pull out a 209 game though.

So, I am liking the Taboo Spare when the lanes are hooking alot, and I don't feel like lofting gutter caps or close to that.  I like trying to stay in the track area.  So far, the carry is a ton better than the old Outlaw.  It may be because I get more ball flare with the Taboo Spare because of the added weight block.  When I checked the flare rings, it looked to be almost a 1/4" of separation between them.

As for a comparison the new urethanes, the urethanes definitely out hook it.  I tried the AMF Hype, and although I had one good set with it, to me it seemed that it just wanted to make its move earlier than I wanted.  I was hoping for more length and smoother roll out of the Hype kind of like the old urethane balls.  But it just seemed the new technology urethanes hooked sooner than most people wanted on a beat up condition.  I couldn't get a consistent roll out of it.

vkowalski1970,

The Nuts Pearl right now is my go to ball.  A strong pearl with good length, but not an angular back end.  I try to stay away from the skid/flip balls.  A mini-review will be coming soon.  I'm in the process of editing film of the Nuts Pearl, Slant Solid, Raging Bull Charged, Jewell, Times Up, OMG Pearl and the Grip.  Been busy with work, and now with Thanksgiving, so I've been kinda lazy when I get home.  But there will be a review up shortly.  Hopefully by next week.

I did just bowl a 6 gamer tourney with it this past weekend, and the shot they had out was a slick one, with out of bounds outside of 10 for most folks.  I played right around 10 all day with it and ended up finishing 3rd.  The last game I did pull out the Euphoria as I had to shuffle in a bit come 4th & 5th game.  Shot 230 with the Euphoria the last game to take third by 20 pins.

A little bit more length out of this ball than my Grip.  Since I got the Nuts Pearl, I haven't thrown the Grip.  And to me the Grip is one of the smoothest pieces out there right now.  I've drilled 3 of these for my friends and they absolutely love the ball.

Gunny,

Thanks for the great summary .

I found the Hype urethane way too early and too large a hooking ball. It needed too much oil to conserve energy. The Desperado  (the original, not the newer LE model) and the Avalanche (Pearl) Urethane are much more usable on short oil and drier lanes conditions. (I'd suggest you try either of these, if possible and if you're so inclined.)  But sometimes I have to swing those too much - too much energy goes into cover boards. This is where I thought the Taboo Spare would come handy.

I guess I should drill up my Taboo Spare then.

Gunny,

Great video. You need some oil down there in Florida. The roll of the plastic in your hands is pretty sick. Almost makes me want to drill a Hammer lol. Nothing like the feeling of being able to move right.

On the topic of the hype urethane, now that I have 2 drilled totally different, I can say that if you had one drilled with a long pin to pap, I think you could get away with it. My weaker hype is able to keep me further rightthan the stronger one I just drilled. I have to say that I like the stronger one on the fresh ths we see around here.

Here's to hoping that amf or 900 bring out something like this, or I nut up and get a Desperado LE.

Going to pick up my nuts pearl next week. Uber excited!

Thanks Impending Doom.  At this particular house, I don't see much oil, and dread every week going there.  I wish 900/AMF would come out with something like the Taboo Spare, I don't care much for hammer balls since the move to ebonite, and escpecially can't stand track(up yours mitch).  But it was the only piece I thought that wouldn't hook off my hands like the Hype.  I thought about the Desperado LE, but was afraid it would be too much off my hand.  Besides, now with this spare ball, I could start being a cool guy and using it for my spares instead of taking hand out of the ball.
