« on: April 20, 2008, 08:22:51 AM »
Okay...I'm not a real good bowler, but I'm new and really trying.    Does anyone have any ideas to help?  What do you think?

Increasing your tempo on the approach might be helpful...  how heavy is that ball again?

Honestly, your approach is probably smoother than mine.

Looks pretty good for a beginner.

Looks like you are trying to aim the ball.  You are also bending forward at the waist instead of bending your knee.  Try keeping your trail leg on the floor for better balance.

Just my 2 cents worth...................It looks like you are getting the ball into motion a little bit too late, which may in turn be causing you to subconsciously to bend at the waist to deliver the ball.

Try getting the ball into motion on your second step.  That may help you free your armswing up, and in turn lead to a tad higher ball speed and less tendency to aim the ball, as a poster noted before.

But, all in all Hannah, what you showed here did not look too bad at all.  Keep at it and continually focus on the positives as you accomplish more and more in the sport.

#1 hold the ball just above waist height and push it straight out from there, instead of up at shoulder level. From there the ball is just pulling your body down when u pushaway.
#2 Timing is very late, this works very well for high power players but prob not the best for you. Push away immediately after your second step, either straight out or down just a little, not up. Along with holding the ball lower will get the ball into your swing faster causing early timing. Early timing uses a lower backswing and faster footwork to create power. Making a big timing change like this can feel very uncomfortable, if u need it get someone to stand beside you on the approach and push the ball away on the desired step. If you do it right at first it should feel almost like your chasing to keep up with the ball.

Work on this stuff first before going onto other things, Good luck.

2nd step for 5 step approach, first step is just for timing.
For early timing u want the ball into the swing right away after the first step
if your late timing like most crankers then you want the ball into the swing more in the middle of the second step or towards the end

theres a big difference between pushaway and when you get the ball into the swing.
for example two bowlers could push the ball out at the same point on their second step but one pushes the ball down and the other straight out. The first bowler would get there ball into the swing sooner because the ball starts swinging right away. the second bowler would get the ball into the swing later because it takes longer to push straight out and it makes the swing longer.
Hope thats clear.

Hey Hannah,

First off I think your technique looks pretty decent you've got a nice sound base to work from. That said, I'd just make a couple of points:

I agree with earlier commenters about the pushaway, it's a little high, the only reason I would suggest lowering it is that if you ever need to speed up, at the moment you have nowhere to go (well, I suppose you could go higher, but not easily). It's possible that with the slightly late timing you have you're having to pushaway higher to increase ball speed. I would recommend lowering your ball to your waist and pushing away a shade earlier but this kind of thing is important to do under the watch of a good coach, changing timing can be fraught with problems if not done correctly.

The second (and I think more important) thing, is balance. Your finishing position at the foul line is a little off balance, probably because your trailing leg is directly behind you, I'd try and get this a little more to the left if you can and focus on holding that position at the line, also getting your non-bowling arm out a little more to your left too will provide a bit of counter-weight to the ball on the other side.

You've got a great style to work with!  Try not to drop your shoulder too much and keep your body square at the line.  Instead of dropping your shoulder after your 2-3rd step try starting with your right shoulder slightly lower than the other with some knee bend.  This puts you in that same finish position in terms of shoulder and chest at the start of the approach, this way you aren't moving around during the approach.

Once you get the timing the rest of your game will fall into place!

I concur w/most about just bending a little more w/the knees instead of the waist so you won't be off balance at the foul line.  Looks like you almost are falling forward.  This will also help you stay behind the ball more.  I'd say start w/that.  One thing at a time until you mastered it.  That & timing.

I don't see a bad shoulder drop at all.  The throwing shoulder always has to be lower than the non throwing shoulder other wise you'd be even more off balance & falling left or standing straigt up, like a Ryan Shafer release. It works for him, but I don't suggest that unless it's comfortable for you.  Think about it.  Your left hand goes out & to the side while your right hand comes down to the lane projecting the ball out to the pins.   I like your husbands' (Jason G) idea about seeing a coach.  Good luck!!

Thanks for the advice everyone!  I'm going to check into a coach now.  I think I really need some help with timing.  I doubt it's very easy to change timing.  I haven't bowled very long, but I've bowled enough to develop some bad habits.

I think I'll practice this summer and try to find a league for the winter.

Thanks!  You all have great advice!!
