Me Bowling - Whaddya Think?
« on: August 19, 2015, 09:46:57 AM »
Hey Guys,

Hope you're all enjoying summer 2015.

I whittled down the DVDs of my trip to El Paso into a 25 minute video with every team event shot.  I have some great shots in here, and not so great shots.  What do you guys think about my physical game?  Any thoughts, feedback, and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Overall looks pretty solid to me.  If you can repeat shots with regularity I'd say keep on going.

Having said that, (if I were your coach) I'd like to see a little more knee bend at release, which is an easy fix.  When we have more knee flex it allows the large muscles such as the quads and hamstrings to carry the load, so to speak.

Conversely, the less our knee bends, the more pressure will end up on the front of the knee joint, and the lower back usually carries too much of the load.  Perhaps a little bit of knee flex in your set-up will help you accomplish this more naturally.

Realize that "you should bowl like you" because your build, flexibility, and footwork will be uniquely yours, but letting the legs provide the "power" is easy, and then the arm is only needed for "direction".  I really don't think an overhaul is the answer when a slight tune-up will do the trick.  Good luck.

I thought the El Paso pattern was the most punative/precise I have bowled on in a long time.  Very little room for error for me.  I wasn't on top of my game and it ate me up.  Looking back I should have made a big move left, but sometimes the bowler is stubborn...  Hope you got a check back.

El Paso was incredibly tricky, both patterns. The team pattern was insanely difficult for all of practice & the first 5 frames - wild.  And I'm exactly right there with ya - I had a great look after I switched balls, but moved way in too late :(

I wonder what they'll do in Reno for 2016. Hopefully it's closer to a 2:1 ratio instead of 1.2 : 1  :P

This, too many guys were banging their cock against wall because its so ingrained in us to "stay right" (if you're right handed). Ok, stay right and shoot 150. It happens every single year.

I cant believe those bionic wrist contraptions are still legal
Those who can't bowl, bowl with two hands.

Haha!  I'm glad they do too - I suffered from horrible tendonitis in both wrists as a teenager. Since college, my wrists just don't do much.  Without any kind of wrist doodad, I can only bowl a few games.

Thanks in advance.

Saw your first shot and thought "if that were me I would be missing to the left". Then saw your next few shots miss left!

Why?  Timing.  Push away earlier and your feet won't beat the ball to the release point.

If I was your coach I would be working on that first/ most.

In general your game looks pretty good, I would feel confident being your coach because you already have a pretty good style and rhythm.

Another way to get your timing right is to change to a 5 step approach, this is more difficult and could add ball speed, but helps take away the feeling that you are pushing your ball out to early.

Keeping to your four step approach, try to make sure your ball arm is fully extended before your left for comes off the ground (before you start your second step).  This will also help maintain a straighter arm swing.

Cheers!  And let me know if you try the timing thing how it worked out?

Hey Peter, thanks for the feedback!

Good eye! That's exactly what my coach and I are working on. Fast feet is something I've suffered from since I started bowling. I just love the feel of fast feet.

In the video, I've got this 4 and a half step approach going on. It's a teeny slide step and then 4 regular steps. It's definitely added speed - I went up from 15.75 - 16.25 to near 17.  And what you mentioned is exactly what I'm trying to do - start my pushaway / ball drop as step 1 concludes.  The benefits are starting to show also - after 15 games in a THS league I have the highest average I've ever had on a THS. And after 15 games on a sport pattern league, I'm comfortable averaging over 200!  I'm also grabbing it a ton less since I'm more in time.  I still struggle now and again, but it's getting there.

I'll try to grab some video in the next few weeks and would love for you guys to point out any differences.
