So I've been using video a lot recently to help my game out by spotting weaknesses in mechanics and what not. I know I have a lot of work left to do, but I felt like I needed some input from people. Try not to be too too critical
. Let me know what you think.

I think that back in the days that loft would have been a great thing but on todays patterns it dont stand a chance. If you just bent over slightly more so you could get the ball down sooner your ball reaction would be much smoother. If you get on something tough then if u miss 2 -3 boards you leave something you cant make. Some of us players need that loft because we dont have enough speed perhaps but you have more than enough speed to go with that killer rev rate. nice video....

I am with John - while your delivery looks good, I'd suggest paying some attention to your sliding foot's knee. You have little knee bend, and as a consequence hold the ball pretty high in the forward swing, and you tend to bend your upper body forward, so that you release the ball a bit late. As a consequence, the ball comes off of your hand when it is already moving upwards again, which creates loft (I know the problem, same here
).
Try to bend your left knee more, while keeping the upper body upright. Ideally, the thumb comes out of the ball before the ball passes your sliding foot's ankle, and will land in a smoother way, in a horizontal trajectory. It might even give you more lift on the ball!

Falling off half your shots can't possibly equate to consistent scoring over the long run though (maybe on a THS). His leverage isn't maximized.

The one thing I noticed mostly was during your approach you are moving your body out of the way of the ball. When the ball is coming down and back your body is moving left to make room for the ball. This is causing you to walk left then you are correcting back to the rightand this not squaring up at the line. Try starting with the ball on your right side rather than in front of your body. that is what I had to do to correct this. It happens to us "larger" bowlers.

That's what I mean. It works ...somehow. But every shot differs from the one before, and I am sure with a more stable finish at the foul line gtkpr31 has much more potential to set free. And mit might just be such a simple thing like a knee bend and foot slide.

Although this is true, bear in mind that some of us can barely bend our knee.

I have been working pretty hard on my drifting and my loft issues a lot recently...I used to loft it almost to the arrows, so I'm definitely improving in that aspect. I haven't come across any patterns that I haven't been able to hook it on due to the lofting and usually it helps a lot. When the patterns get burnt in the front lofting allows me to clear the heads really easily even with the earliest revving balls, which gives me a lot more room usually for mistakes.
Does anyone find a terrible problem with the path of my approach as it relates to the big step left i take to 1. allow my ball to get to the right and 2. to remedy the drift right on my slide? If it's a big problem, how would I remedy it?

If the method works for one, why change it? I had ditched the "ideal" or "textbook" method of bowling and had been bowling better and better. True, some fundamentals have to be followed, but it's the end results that count. Everybody is different and so is our body. Not everyone can be as textbook as Chris Barnes or Parker Bohn III. Look at WRW and Mika Koivuniemi or better yet, Jason Belmonte and you know what I mean. These guys still achieve the end results, striking and winning.
gtkpr31, if it works for you, don't change anything. Unless you are in a slump or can't score elsewhere, don't mess your game. I had mess up my game and in a slump for one year after I try to do bowling in a "textbook" manner. Now I'm back and better!

The guy comes on here and asks us to critique him. If he feels his game was sound, he wouldn't come on here and ask. He may be scoring well with his sytle but his style could use some work.
gtkpr31, you can try some of the pointer's that these BR members mentioned here. They may or may not improve your game but as LL mentioned, not everyone's style has to be texrbook. If if works for you, who's to say that you're doing it wrong. The name of the game is to knock down as many pins as possible, no matter how it is done.

I think the balance is off at the foul line sometimes. I have the same problem when I'm shooting around sometimes. I have noticed when I really get my shoe sliding just right and can keep my self on my slide foot in perfect balance through the shot/follow through, I tend to make much better shots. Usually when I'm on balance I can hit my marks and tend not to give the pocket away. Thats one of my biggest issues is just being balanced. My back swing isn't high its bearly past my butt..lol but that sometimes causes me to muscle the shot sometimes and pull it but usually when I'm on balance everything is more free and I usually don't muscle it.
Just something to keep in mind, sometimes you kept balance and some you did not. I'm exactly the same way so just going from my experience is what I'm going off of.
Other then that the way you walk up there, as long as you do the same thing and it doesn't throw you off that should be just fine because some drift some don't and all sort of stuff so I wouldn't worry about that too much but balance at the line is the main thing I think.
Good luck.

in my opinion u "wobble" too much during ur approach, cuz on ur third step u move quite a bit to ur left and then on the last step u drift back
that can be good or can be bad, dependin on how "stable" ur move to left and right are, if u can always finish where u want, then forget about it, its good, if u cant, then try something to fix it

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment
When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.

Go bowl something other then 39 foot ths and you will be very surprised. You need a more solid finishing position, cut down on hitting it so much and straighten your elbow out. If you plan to just bowl ths then your style is fine.
-
when your steps get too big you fall off the shot.

Your game is NOTHING special. All I see is another guy hooking the entire lane with a terrible physical game. Your timing needs to be revamped, arm swing needs to be lose and free, and you need to post your shots to maximize you leverage and accuracy.
I would take a look at BrunsNick's videos, he has a good power game that has all of these things.

You certainly have some power in your game. However, I worry that you are really trying to "muscle" the shot - sacrificing some smoothness in order to increase your revs.
I see a lot of drift in your approach to the line, and a lot of elbow bend to try to generate the larger flat spot in the swing to get your revs.
Also, you have very little slide, preferring instead to plant and rip it.
These are all non-typical motions that are generally regarded as inconsistent with the "ideal" bowling swing and release.
However, I agree with other posters that if you are comfortable and can be consistent, then there is little point in changing it.
I don't know if this will hurt you or help you, but I would try straightening your elbow. This will encourage a straighter, less muscled swing. I think you still have more than enough wrist strength to get good leverage (and revs) on the ball. It will also give you a more consistent line, and allow you to play a little straighter. This will help on tougher oil patterns, where consistency is critical.
Thanks for posting, and good luck! Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for the constructive things to work on for my game. Mostly everyone was very gracious and had good things to say. For those who think my game is terrible and "nothing special," I have to say that I'm far from terrible I think. I have my PBA card and have cashed in regional events, so I can't be terrible.
My timing is late for a reason, when my timing is earlier, I chicken wing it. I drift for a reason. Since I'm not 150 pounds, when I slide, my legs are bigger and I cannot slide directly straight so I walk left to prevent myself from being 10 boards right of where I start. My knees don't bend a lot for a reason. If I bend my knees a lot, my spine tilt gets too far forward causing me to loft the ball terribly and grab it at the bottom of the swing.
I agree I do need to work on my balance at the line. I've seen worse arm swings in my time (Mike Scroggins). Also, if you paid any attention to the videos, you can clearly see I am not trying to hook the whole lane in all of them. I do what the lanes dictate. I'm on the 13 board in half of the videos and I'm only right of 20 about 3 of the shots. If I wanted to hook the whole lane like a tool, I would.
