My first video
« on: May 03, 2008, 05:49:41 PM »
Here's a video of me at my league this morning. It's three shots. I hope the result of them doesn't matter too much because I didn't really show the ball hitting the pins on the first two shots. Looking at it, I really gotta wonder how I average 200+. Anyways, am I horrible, or better than I thought?

Sorry for the poor quality but it was during league so I couldn't get any angle I wanted.

Try to get the ball into your swing a little earlier, right when you take your second step. Also, do whatever you need to do to make this motion -- the push-away -- as smooth as possible. Relax a little and just go with the flow. Let the ball go and focus on getting your timing down before you fool around with releases, etc.

Yeah, I know my timing is a little late.  I always got confused by that because I started my push away on my second step which should put everything together.  But what I think I'm doing is making my push away too long by doing a circular motion with it.

Did you think I was fooling around with release?  I really wasn't.  Let me know what made you think that.

I didn't think you were fooling around with the release, but my point was that  nailing your timing is far more important than the release. You can't have a good release, anyways, without good timing.

Right.  Timing has always been a problem for me which is why I'm surprised I do as well as I do.  There's very few days where I'm actually firm at the line at least for half a game.  I like to think I've gotten good at the way I do it, but now I'm looking to move on to a whole new level with better form overall.

What's your opinion on my foot speed?  I like the fact that it's nice and even through the whole approach, but I'm wondering if going a tad faster is an option.  That would, of course, force me to put the ball in motion faster than I already have to.

Interesting. You have great potential. I would say work on the timing a little. If you just can't get the ball into motion on the second step maybe think about going to 6 steps and having 2 steps before you push off. The other thing I see is that you really drop your right shoulder. Try to keep your shoulders more level and get more knee bend. Not only with this improve you consistancy at the line, it will help add leverage at your release and you will not have to force the ball so much. In many ways bowling is like golf. Less is more. Less muscle will get you a better swing, and less muscle will get you a better release. You will be much more consistant with your RPMs if you can get your release slightly earlier and get lower on the left knee. You do have a great fluid swing. I don't say this to many people but you seem to have as my pro calls it "the golden swing" which is hard to come by. I had it as a kid and have spent the last 5 years trying to get it back. Don't ever change that. Just try to work on keeping level at the foul line and you can do great things. From there the rest of your form will fall into place. One final thing. I see you really working to put RPMs on the ball. Remember bowling is truly a game of accuracy. I would rather have a 12 Lb ball with 200 RPMs that hits the pocket every shot then a 16 Lb ball with 500 that is always on the head pin. All you have to do is put a few tweaks on your game and just keep it up. Great video.

Thanks Locke.  Is my shoulder dropped more at the line, or even once I start moving(a coach told me I do this)?  I realize I do one or the other, I just haven't been able to break it without feeling weak.  Yeah, I'll agree I'm trying to put some more revs on than if I wasn't paying attention to it.  That's why I also have my wrist slightly cupped and cocked to the left(emphasis on slightly).  The problem with me fixing this is that I feel like then I'll be bending too much at the waist to get the backswing high enough.  But looking at it my backswing seems high but it sure doesn't feel that high.

I should also mentione I squease the ball a bit because if I didn't I wouldn't keep it in my hand.  I'm trying to get this worked out in the mean time.  I know it affects consistency in release, but could the fact that I squease it also make me want to rev up more than what's natural?

Having a bad fit on your ball will kill your natural revs. You start to drop your shoulder at the start of your swing but you keep it all the way through. If you want to get your swing higher you do not want to bend at the waist. You want to open your shoulders by moving the right shoulder back. This will allow you to take a high back swing and stay more upright. Also, trust me, if you get lower you will and get stronger at the foul line you will not have to work to feel like you have a strong release.

Okay, that stuff makes sense.  About getting lower though, how would I go about doing that without feeling like I'm practically kneeling on my right knee?  I'm always had a problem getting any lower than that without creating some other problem.

I hear ya.  But a pretty good player.  Did/do you have a coach yourself?  I don't really have one which leads me to the advice of the people online.
