My Newest Video
« on: August 13, 2007, 02:19:57 PM »
Hey everyone, i'd like any comments you can possibly say about me. Good, bad, I will take it. Here's my oldest video:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_VUG2w29lSs from 2/21/07

My Newest Video. Tried to fix my form any way I can. I don't get help, or coaching. All my dad does is help me with where to throw the ball lol.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qe4-2KO9wlY from today, 8/13/07

Let me know what you think. I didn't change too much I don't think, actually. Just let me know, i'll take the advice, and make a new video. Thanks!

BTW, the lanes were a little fried, so that calls for my little bit faster arm swing.

its a little tough to tell for two reasons, the video quality, and each is only one shot. Makes it a little easier when you have a series of shots and a steady camera. Cameras are expensive so a new one isn't always reasonable. I just started filming as well and will give you a link to the first one I just posted of me getting back in practice for league.(and i used my fiances digital camera, because mine isnt that great) Once you see yourself on camera sometimes you can see the flaws you may not feel or know your doing when your bowling.(at least i know i did)

Im not a bowling coah, but like most younger bowlers you open your shoulders on the backswing to try and put a lot of revs on the ball. Which is fine if you practice a lot and have good timing. Can become a problem on tighter shots when accuracy is important such as a lot of oil on the gutters with little backend. There is usually a tendancy to miss right and float the ball to the gutter.

heres alink to my first vid throwing a Circle High Voltage I just drilled. You can't tell in the video but it is flaring either the thumb or left finger about 3/4 down the lane. once i get a little extra weight taken out it should finish even stronger. shot is a freash house shot.

Thanks for the comment (:. I really can't stop the opening of my shoulders because i've been doing that for so long. I've been told by people this isn't a very bad habbit, it's just a different way of throwing a ball. There's power players on tour who do the same thing, and they seem fine. The best i've done with closing my shoulders more is in my newest video. As you can see from my old one, they look more open (at lesat to me they do anyways)

Any other comments/suggestions?

Thanks

Hey,

It looks good overall... But you may want 2 try reducing the amount you bend from the hip, and also the speed that you bend (you seem to be level with the floor around steep 2.5, this makes it hard not to come up on the last steep i.e like bob learn jr.) your probably ok finishing in the same position i would just like to see you bending forward to  get to it rather than coming up.  You may also want 2 try getting your follow through more forward (now it seams to be going 2 far to the right.. may be the camera angle or the amount that you where swinging the ball so much)

Myser, Thanks for the tip. I'll try that out. I'm willing to try anything right now!

hotshotstormbowler, I do drift somewhat, but I always end up where I want/need to be. Is drifting a problem, or even a future problem?

Thanks

I don't think you need to worry to much about 'drifting' or lateral movement... as long as your lateral movement is the same each shot.  I have talked about this with the team USA coach (rod ross) and he doesn't feel that lateral movement is a problem as long as it is consistent (he does think drifting is a problem... he defines this as the number of boards different your lateral movement is from shot 2 shot)

Drifting is common I know I do, fortunately it is consistent. Also the opening your shoulders in the backswing is very common especially with powerplayers. Like I was saying earlier its just something that makes your timing even more important. If your a little early or late then your shot will be greatly effected very similar to golf. Like Tiger woods he coils up a lot in his swing and if he is a little off in the timing it results in a bad shot with the driver. Makes the short game very important, and in this case the spare game.

Keep practicing and posting more vids

I used to open up like that when I stood left and threw right. I was also donating money in tournaments at the time and told myself I wouldn't do any more until I could throw straight up and in.

I had the luxury of a gold level coach who was hanging out after our league night ended, who stayed to bowl with our team (he was a friend of a teammate).

He gave me things to work on in practice that worked out well. I have a very diverse game now, but my average has dropped 10 pins since last fall.

Sounds bad, but I don't have anymore 225, 170, 190 set nights like I used to. I'm much more consistent now with my scores.

In perspective, I was averaging 205 on the THS and 158 on my sport league. Now I average 195 on the THS (through Summer) and have shot very well in the two tournaments I've bowled in recently. I don't have any sport league averages since the change, but I feel confident in that I can line up on any pattern out there now. I just have to learn how to move as they break down.

I placed 4th in a city tournament with a 209, 267, 268 (straight up the 8 board) and 4th in the Largo ProAm with a 193, 180, 186 on the Shark pattern (I played this one across the middle with an open stance). WRW was on the pair next to me, what an awesome experience

What does all this mean? If you want to smoke up the house shot in league, then keep on keepin on. I would highly recommend that you consider learning how to square up and be more diverse if you want to compete in tournaments and continue to work on playing many different lines.

I will average higher in the next year once I become more familiar with the drastic changes I've made to my game.

I also recommend you try to find two houses in your area that accommodate swinging the shot and playing it down and in so you can work on both lines. I throw straight up 5 on synthetics and hook the lane on the old guardian.

It doesn't have to be an unbreakable habit.
