A new Video, with Music!!
« on: January 09, 2007, 02:34:16 PM »
I have a lot more shots in this one, playing (or trying to play) different lines.

http://media.putfile.com/Fix-Me-Please

I feel good about very little in regards to my game, but I think I'm at least on my way.  I shot VERY bad overall tonight, I just couldn't find the pocket with any consistency.  I didn't think I was throwing it all that bad.  Sometimes I just have NO idea what to do out there.  I should also add that this is a brand new house, and the shot is still changing on a weekly basis.

Something to try would be to keep your head down, bring your eyes in and try to roll the ball over the dots...it should help with the dropping of the ball, make sure you get your hand up the back of the ball and keep it that way until release.  You also need to focus on getting some knee bend which will also help you roll the ball more and get it into the lane smoother.

That was better than the video you posted the other day and I think it may have shown something about why you drop the ball.
I noticed in this video that when you were playing the extreme outside you are more prone to short arm it or back off right before release. This is most of the time due to excess muscle caused from trying to guide the ball.
Something else I hadn't picked up before was that you start with the ball very low yet you have a shoulder high back swing the only way this can happen is if you use muscle to get the ball that high or you have a lot of upper body tilt which you don't so you must be picking the ball up in your back swing or you use muscle to accelerate the ball early on in your back swing. Regardless of the cause this practice just begs to cause timing problems which will affect your accuracy and leverage which in turn affects your confidence and that is a sure fire way to ingrain bad habits and the tendency to guide the ball instead of swinging it.
Where do you target on the lane? (dots, arrows, etc)
If you prefer to stay playing the line you are now something you can do is in practice intentionally throw several balls in the gutter at around 20' this will train your subconscious that it is OK and will help to keep you from guiding the ball.
Secondly raise the ball in your stance this will alter your timing a touch which seems to be a bit late. Think of your hand as just being a passenger on the ball that is going for a ride until about 6" from your slide ankle this may help you to reduce the muscle you use in your back swing.

Yes, I bowl in Johnsburg, Illinois, as stated by Rev-O.

I probably do muscle the swing, and I will spend my practice time working on a free arm swing.  I remember I did have a very free swing for awhile, but it felt so weird, with the weight of the ball on the end of my hand feeling like it was just flopping around.

the reason u r dropping the ball i think its because as re-evolution said muscling in the backswing, if u want to keep the backswing (that is if u feel more comfortable) u can change the way u step. normally for ppl doing 5 steps is the 3rd step, but since u have a 4 step, then its the 2nd. try to make ur 2nd step longer (u have a very short one atm) and by doing that it will give u more time for a higher backswing. and at the foul line u will be able to put more of the energy into revolutions. give it couple of times and see if u still have the problem of dropping the ball.

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one

You need to go to a five step approach.Your timing is all over the place with a four step .With a five step you should start with a small first step, then push the ball with the second step. With your four step you start the ball erratically. If you want to stay with a four step make sure you step and push the ball at the same time. This takes practice to get in sync. but you are dedicated enough to iron it out.

Thanks, I think I'll try to mess with my approach a little, and try to free up my armswing.  I also notice I tend to push it out to the right a bit, which could explain some of my targeting issues.

Do a side-view video so we can see your swing plane. Odds are you are dropping the ball cause your swing plane is much higher than the plane of the lane. Meaning it's impossible for you to lay the ball down on the lane cause your torso is so upright that unless your arm is 2ft longer the ball won't get there....Your swing and body tilt causes the ball to go INTO the lane, instead of ONTO the lane.

Work on starting taller and gradually getting lower as you approach the line. Ending up with a good knee bend. It looks like you really try hard to keep your head steady, that's good, but if you're 6ft tall when you start and 6ft tall when you finish, there's no way your swing can get the ball level with the lane.

I was going to say the same thing that jon did. You got to get that knee bent so you can make the distance from the ball and the ground less far. This will then help you be more accurate because then you will roll the ball move over your target rather then it being tossed off your hand onto the lane. Normaly the cleaner you can get it from your hand to the lane, the easier it is to hit your target.
