Form, Release, SLOW MOTION!! :D
« on: February 22, 2010, 04:32:15 PM »
Just got a new camcorder and decided to see what this baby can do!  The balls that I used were the Storm Fast and Furious.  I am open to any questions, comments, or concerns!  Thanks for watching!

By the way, yes I know I have late timing.

Well, revs aren't the problem, but you seem to be spraying the ball. Even a cranker should hit a 2 board spot if you want to be competitive.

I used to have the same problem for a while, but I would bowl a few games looking at nothing but my intended breakpoint the entire time until I could finally bring my eyes back to the arrows. It will seem weird at first, and you might think you'll push the ball through the breakpoint, but trust me if you can actually focus on your breakpoint the entire time and finish on the ball you might actually even find yourself doing it all the time, but I did move my mark back to the arrows.

Another thing I noticed is that for all of your revs you are pretty much up the back up the ball which depending on the pattern could cause early burn with no grab on the backend. Do you have any other releases?

If at all possible could you bowl an entire game, with the camera looking down lane in slow motion, and don't change anything with your hand? I think it has more to do with hitting your breakpoint consistently.

Even when you hit the board you intend to get the ball out to, it isn't guaranteed that you threw it to the same spot, because you could be getting the ball to the 4 board at 40 feet one time, and to the 4 board at 42 or 38 feet the next time. A suggestion to fix this is to get the last lane in your house, put two pieces of tape on the on both sides of your intended breakpoint creating a gate. You can make it wide at first to get used to it, but you should slowly move the pieces of tape closer and closer together till your breakpoint is a 2 board gate.

Yeah, we do need a form video.

Also, can you load the video up onto: www.swingacademy.com

then post the link.

The website is free, and it'll allow us to really break down your bowling swing. I have a feeling that whoever measured your PAP is wrong, but I would like to actually check first before I call someone out like that.

I have multiple releases, depending on the lane conditions.  At an early age, I learned different hand positions and speed control-- you know, back before every ball on the market was made to hook the whole lane.

I might shoot a few games tomorrow night after league and cap a few games.  I'm still learning how to use the features on this camcorder, and right now all I can get is 12 seconds on slow motion each shot.  Hopefully I figure it out though.

Hmm, that may be something I have to try one day when I get time.  I'm always looking for things to make my game better, and this definitely sounds like a winner.  Thanks for the helpful tip!

You have a great release. Most pros come up the back of the ball.  Work on adjusting your tilt a little when needed (burned up heads).
Also most pros have late timing. I would suggest working on your balance.

Overall, everything looks good, so the issues must be speed and break point control.

I know you previously stated that you were aware of your late timing, but as long as you can modify your timing if need be depending on the pattern there shouldn't be an issue. If you can't modify your timing or steps I would put some work in on that.

I mainly just wanted the slow motion videos down lane so we can get a realistic idea of where you are throwing the ball. You might want to do this also with the camera zoomed in at the arrows to get an idea of how often you hit your first mark and where your misses tend to be.

Yeah, I use that website for everything in terms of analyzing sports. I've used it for Golf, Bowling, and even teaching my wife Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Why buy the software when you can get it for free.

Glad to be of service. Hopefully, if we all put it to good use we'll all become better bowlers.

I second the balance comment. You'll generate a more consistent shot if you can keep that non-slide leg down on the deck, rather than flicking it up in the air.

I would have thought, someone with your style would have a shorter power step than you have (if you look at the best power players, they almost stand on their own toes in the power step) so you might want to look at shortening that a bit.

I'd also say that your downswing drops really quickly giving you a very small release window, if you try and extend your arm out towards your target further (rather than curling your forearm back towards you) that might help your consistency too.
