Posted a video of a practice game a threw last week.

Hi folks. I posted a video of me throwing a practice game last week.  I was basically moving to a 5 step approach (after using 4 for years) in an attempt to get some more speed.  Also was testing out some new SST8s I picked up.  I'd love to hear your thoughts on things I could work on to be better.  Note, I've never had a session with a coach ever and pretty much self taught, so there's plenty of room for improvement.  Thanks guys!

Tip #1.  You positioned the camera in about the worst place it could be to be able to analyze the video.

can't completely tell bc of the angle, but it looks like your swing path might be out of line

That's probably true.  Unfortunately, all I had to work with was my phone and a table.  Didn't have many options.  I decided last minute to take the video so I could see myself, just thought I'd throw it out here in case someone had some advice for me.

The angle isn't optimal, however, watch your torso all through the steps and release.  For consistency you'd like less movement (up & down) and less forward lean at the release.  Why?

When we bend forward at the waist the down swing can get too steep, causing us to either; 1) lose the ball early off the hand, or 2) use too much muscle trying not to lose the ball early.  Too much muscle can lead to directional issues, too.

My advice would be to set your spine angle at setup (a little tilt forward is okay) and then try to maintain that same spine angle all through your footwork and release.  It's a relatively easy thing to do that will pay huge dividends as you strive for consistency from shot to shot.  Good luck.

There are two angles to position the camera next time you get a chance to do so.

1. directly behind with the view of your whole approach.
2. a side view about two lanes away on your right (left side if you're a lefty) side with the camera by the foul line (two lanes away) and a person following your whole approach.

I'm not a "paper coach" or even qualified by the standards from others on BR, but I like to watch the persons footwork. Is it consistent and/or in line in each step. Many bowlers don't know where they end up (what board) at the foul line and/or even slide at the same place, drift or no drift. It can also affect your balance at the line.

Also, I like to see if their head is moving up and down too much during the approach. having an elevator approach can lead to issues in hitting your spot/target or even balance issues. I have this issue as well.

Does a round object have sides? I say yes, pizza has triangles..

I agree with xrayjay regarding footwork.  My absolute worst shots are when I'm not paying attention to footwork and get sloppy.  My best bowling with the least amount of effort happens when footwork is good.

Folks,

Thanks for the feedback.  You were right about the footwork and keeping my head level.  I worked on that last night in league.  Wound up with a fantastic night - 658.  Should have been much higher if I had my wits about me more.  That 658 is with about 6 splits ( 4 because I missed the transition and hit very high in the pocket, and 2 pocket 7-10 from over adjustment and being light).  My form felt great and my teammates commented on how good it looked.  Thanks guys!
