quick phone video...thoughts?
« on: December 04, 2013, 09:28:51 PM »
Took a quick video today. Got...most of my form in there. Just looking for some feedback regarding my style. I've been practicing a lot and feel pretty good about where I'm at right now. Any ideas, tips, or suggestions would be appreciated. Always gotta get better. Lmk thanks.

You're a guy that wants to hook it with the lines of a guy that throws it straighter.  "Posting up" at the foul line (foot open, heel outside of toes) is pretty old school and keeps your hips too closed for what you're doing.    This is forcing you to turn the ball early so you don't drill yourself in the back of the leg with the ball.  Ideally you want to get your foot turn slightly the other way so you can keep the ball in line with your head for better leverage, this will make staying behind the ball longer easier to do.

I see. So to make sure I understand, my body's position is forcing me to come around the side, whereas if I am to open myself up some it will keep me behind the ball longer? Basically my body isn't cooperating with the direction I'm throwing it? Want to make sure I've got an understanding of this before I try anything new.

I do have an issue with pulls. That being my moat common mistake what you're saying would make perfect sense. Thank you for the feedback.

It's really tough to see on youtube.  If you can look at the video frame by frame you will see it.  Your body basically is stuck, so in able to protect itself the body takes over and redirects the ball right before release so you don't jam it into your ankle.

You want to be able to open up a little to keep the ball inside of your head to have better leverage.  Once you get into a position of better leverage and opening up your angles it will make it easier to stay behind it and get you in a position to be able to do it.

If you watch the guys that hook it, basically the more the ball is inside of their head the more leverage you have and the more the hook it.  I'm not saying get into a position like Robert Smith does, but he is an exaggerated example.

I'd have to watch more.  This is only from analyzing one shot and it's getting pretty nit picky.

Yeah the plan is to get more video up, but I do think I have an understanding of what you're saying. I appreciate the advice.

This would also explain why I typically have the most success on heavier oil where I'm playing a straighter line. If I'm standing at or right of center I typically feel like I'm rolling the ball better, never knew why. Might be on to something here.  Thanks again.

Those who can't bowl, bowl with two hands.

If we're going to let the fashion police out then you can't forget to mention the yellow shoe laces.

Lol. The jeans aren't that bad, just a little torn on the bottom. Nothing wrong with them other than that....and what's wrong with the shoelaces! Haha. Honestly, I let my daughter pick them out and she said they were perfect cuz the shoe has some gold on it. I went with it.

Well I won't get new jeans, but the laces...I'm kicking around the idea of getting a pair of tanks, so the laces might be near the end of their life. Lol.

Thanks for all the help guys. Haha.

Explain please, I dont understand the "keep the ball in line with your head for better leverage" I bowl very much like the OP and I'm trying to be consistent at opening up the lanes too.
Now throwing pretty much all flavors...

If you watch video from behind draw a line vertically down from your head.  You want the ball inline or inside of this line.  The further inside this line you are the more leverage you will have.  In Matt's video you will notice that as he gets to release his hand comes around the ball and bumps out slightly so he doesn't hit his ankle, getting the ball outside of his head and loosing leverage.

But it's not as easy as saying get the ball under your head.  You have to get into certain positions to be able to do this, and if you do it or don't could be for different reasons than Matt.

So to accomplish this, I've been trying to essentially leave my body more open when I get to the line, and stay behind the ball longer. So far ive had very mixed results as you can imagine. Seems like the more awkward it feels the better the ball rolls. Awkwardness means different, and in this case, I think it means I'm making the right progress. Lol.
