rev calculation
« on: April 19, 2009, 08:51:30 AM »
hey guys, i have a video and at the end i shot a lane level shot, i was wondering if anyone would be able to just give me a rough estimate. im probably around the 150-200 rpm mark but was just wondering to get other guesses. lane level shot is at 1:11. if you have any tips for my form in general from the rest of the vid feel free to comment. I know i suck.

Im so glad people are brainwashed to think that TRACK sucks. And its even funnier when im carrying with my TRACK ball and they''re going flat ten with their OTHER BRANDS ball.

I'd say it's a little higher than that.  For reference, I throw the ball with around 230-250rpms usually (I measured it with frame-by-frame video).  You can see my ball roll in this video for comparison.

The biggest tip I can offer from watching your vide...  free up that swing and let gravity and the ball do more of the work for you.  It looks like you're trying to throw and spin the ball, as opposed to rolling the ball.  You really accelerate your swing at the bottom.  It's fine to accelerate a little at the bottom (see Richie Wolfe for a good example), but you're doing it to the point where it's hard for you to repeat it each time.  Sometimes you project the ball really far right, sometimes you don't project it much at all.  I think you would have better success by just not trying so hard.  Just roll the ball off your hand.  Power, revs, all that good stuff come from just the motion of your fingers rolling up from the bottom of the ball after your thumb comes out at the bottom of the swing -- trying harder to throw and spin the ball, like you did in this video -- doesn't really gain you anything from this aspect.  I think you would feel a lot more comfortable and your ability to repeat shots would go up if you could free up your swing and just let the ball roll off your hand more cleanly.  Your best bet is to bring the camera with you to practice bowling so you can get immediate feedback on how your armswing looks.  Good luck!

thanks dan, i watched it again and realized just how much i accelerate it at the bottom. im gonna try and take video again soon as i think i've freed some of it up and am much better at the line.

i think you should at least have a gap between your feet 2 to 3 inches for balance.

Lets say you have 8 hand revs, which is a low estimation: then your rev rate with a ball speed of 2.65s be roughly 180rpm.
10 hand revs and your rev rate is around 220-230.
12 revs and its up in 270.

To calculate this i clocked your ball speed,  i got it to be around 2.65s, give or take. I couldnt estimate a correct number of your natural revolutions, or hand revs but lets say its 10.
Then i took your 10 hand revs, divided it with your ball speed in seconds and then multiply it by 60 (one minute in seconds) to get 226.415..8
(10/2.65)*60
