My form with the updated hinge
« on: January 22, 2013, 04:53:59 PM »
I feel better then ever with this style change. After 7 games (the video was shot at the end of the 7th game, in fact this shot in the video was my 11th shot that game, the previous 10 were strikes) I felt like I could easily go another 3-4 games. The lanes were pretty fried after me and my buddy were practicing. The ball you see is my IQ Tour Pearl in OOB finish. After bowling today I took the ball to the proshop and they went to a 4000 grit sanding disc. I forgot what he called it, started with the letter N.

Anyway, this is the 1st video I've ever posted on youtube and even on this forum. I know how some people can be on this forum and I'm ready for whatever good or bad to be said.

Looks pretty good to me. Good timing, smooth and looks very natural. Not forced or mechanical at all. Looks pretty repeatable as well.

Do you happen to have any videos of your style before the switch to the hinge? I know you said this is the first video you've posted, but I'm curious as to how it looked before the change.

Looks good!

I unfortunately don't. I can say that before this change I felt extremely off. Everything felt mechanical and must be perfect and there was a lot of muscle involved.

This new style IMO has already shown me what it can do for me in several ways. I can bowl more games with better accuracy, virtually no effort involved, and repeating shots are easy. My last 3 games today were 288, 215, 220 after I had already worked on my hinge form the previous 4 games.

Tomorrow night will be the 1st test with the new style during league bowling. I will update end results good or bad.

BTW, thanks for confirming what I thought about my timing. The thought about changing to the hinge style was mainly due to severe timing issues with the traditional push-a-way form.

Watch videos from Chris Barnes, Shaun Rash, Bill O'Niell, even Norm Duke has a little hinge in his form.

Here's another video, the part with the hinge style starts at 2:36.

Glad you're finding success with the change.......

In looking at the video, it appears you're putting the ball in motion in the second step of a four step approach. The classic four step has the ball push out the same time as the first step. There is nothing wrong with your variation, but it's something I don't see often.

Have you always pushed with this timing?

Steven, I can't view the videos, but in the classic 4 step, pushaway type release, the ball starts dropping down into the backswing during the second step, correct?  If he is using the hinge pushaway, I think it should be dropping about the second step.  If the ball was dropped in the first step with the hinge, it would probably be too early.  Does the timing look correct in the 3rd step?

You're right. His ball simply starts dropping in the second step, which is roughly equivalent to what happens in the 4-step classic approach. I'm so used to seeing movement in the first step, I jumped the gun. Thanks for the correction.

Your both correct. I used to push the ball away as I 1st started my right foot motion but after a few weeks this motion would get later and later. So I decided to change it up so I can actually repeat the hinge with virtually no muscle input the entire swing. I've also noticed a small increase in ball speed at the pin deck. Last night was the 1st test with the approach and shot 202, 237, 216 for 655. I feel better then ever and feel that I have yet to see the full benefit of the new change.

Where I used the term 'hinge pushaway' should probably be corrected to 'hinge dropaway' to more accurately describe the action.

Yeah, because it's not a push-a-way anything now, just roll into the back swing. It's probably the best change I've done in a long time outside of getting a new ball only to find out that my hand span was a tad too short.
