Some advice after a couple years off?
« on: September 16, 2011, 12:37:07 AM »
Hello all, just started bowling again after a couple years off.  Just looking to get some advice for things to work on.  It's a video of one shot, then again in slow motion:

Swing looks kinda wonky to me, and does anyone have any advice to get me to not jerk my head at release?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Pretty good. The only thing I'd say is to not try so hard at the bottom of the swing. I could be wrong, but it looks like you're trying to max out the revs, which can be troublesome on house shots, but more importantly it's hard to repeat consistently.

If you can repeat it, you can find a way to score. Relax and let the ball do more of the work, and when you get my age your shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand will still be in great shape. If you're playing the right part of the lane with the right ball it should be nearly effortless looking. Good luck.

I agree with the above. You look pretty good, but you lose some "fluidity" right at the last second before the release point, and it looks like your whole upper bodies energy is being focused into the release point in an effort to "get it all" at the bottom of the swing.

Instead of "loading up" and "getting it all" at the release point, try to focus more on having your hand in a good position (which it already seems to be), and continue that nice fluid motion all the way through the release point without trying so hard to "explode" at the release.

Your timing is also geared toward that "explosion" by having your feet slightly ahead of your swing, and allowing your feet to reach the release point just slightly ahead of the ball. This gives you leverage, which allows the upper body the fractions of a second it takes to "uncoil" its energy through your arm, and end up in the explosion of power at the release point.

Thanks for the replies.  Definitely see what you're talking about; suppose that's due to my days as a teen trying to hook the lane.  I actually prefer playing straighter anyways, so I'll definitely be working on having a more natural release.

Your pushaway can be better.

Your  accelerating too early. Wait until the ball is at your heel of your slide foot before you accelerate.

This is actually similar to what was happening to me when I came back to the game about 7 months ago. I was tending to muscle the ball rather than have a natural release and it was causing some issues with consistancy.  Like you, I really wanted to explode with power at the bottom of the swing rather than come out of the ball naturally and let the ball do the work.  So, the coach helped me to work on that and have improved my consistancy.

Basically the same as the others- coming out of the ball more naturally I think will really help you out.  Good luck and welcome back to the sport.
