Taping a ball
« on: September 13, 2008, 03:25:17 PM »

When watching some videos (usually the ones done more professionally) the bowler puts white tape on the ball to allow the roll to be seen more clearly.

Now my question is what kind of tape is this? the stuff I have tried all leaves a tonne of residue on the ball, or in the case of hockey tape (Yes I am Canadian, and every single one of us owns a case of it) it picks up oil, and peeled itslef off after like 3 shots.

Any suggestions guys?

It shouldn't pick up oil if it is going from the grip center to the PAP. I wouldn't think it should ever roll over the tape when placed there, but I could be wrong.

The key is if the tape leaves a residue try wiping it off with a cleaner. Yes I know that is considered manual labor. Also the next big step would be if the tape comes off try to put another piece on. I now it sounds like a lot of work but if you try these two steps it may benifit your game.

First of all, make sure that the surafce of the ball is CLEAN. Nothing will stick onto an oily ball unless you nput some screws through it

Thumb tape is for the PAP or just above thingers a very good choice, personally I like to use some paper masking tape that painters use. It is very thin, yellowish-white, cheap, holds well onto a clean ball and is easy to get rid of - but you will surelys have to clean the ball surface after taking any markings off.

We use White Electric Tape.  Haven't had a problem with it leaving residue.

I use Johnson & Johnson first aid tape which is available in different widths. Doesn't come off even if you roll over it and leaves behind very little adhesive.

thanks for the tips guys,

and the wise cracks about the manual labor (thats why I love this place)

Perhaps I should have been more specific about the location, I did a video for a university, and they asked that I tape from my PAP and then up my VAL to the center of the ball, and this is the one that was getting run over.

But I will try the electrical tape. Thanks Bill
