Testing Balls Side by Side
« on: May 12, 2007, 11:38:49 AM »
I would just like to say something that I am sure most of you have noticed, but when comparing 2 or more bowling balls, it would really help if the person was able to get it to the same spot down the lane.  I have seen a bunch of different videos where balls are suppose to hook more than another ball, but they are not hitting the same area down the lane.  Yes, it is nice that you cross 3rd or 4th arrow in the heads, but that doesn't mean anything when you are missing 5 boards down the lane.

Just a little rant.

I don't do side by side videos just for that reason.

Well with your rant, I would atleast expect a demonstration video to show us "how-to-do-it"....

People are committed to only showing strikes, that they neglect to show the identical lines of different balls.  Swallow your pride for a few seconds in the video, and toss all the featured balls up the same line, just to show the viewer a true representation of how the ball stack up.

So does that mean you can't hit the same mark twice?    I'm just saying.

I think Bar5003 does a pretty good job of this in his videos.  His earlier videos had the boards marked (arrows and break point) and the later videos use overlay to compare reactions.

http://www.amf300reviews.com/Video.html

Personally, I think that people are trying to show you the strike line for the ball.  If they can play 20 out to 12 and strike with Ball X, and 20 out to 6 with Ball Y, I guess they sort of think that you should be able to figure out the difference in the ball strength....probably about 6 boards.

Do we really need to see them throw Ball Y 20 to 12 and hit the 2 pin?

We also need to realize that making a video takes quite a bit of time - you have to film the shots, transfer them to your PC, edit them out, splice them together, add the music, put it whatever pictures and text, and then process it all.  You end up spending a couple of hours to get a minute or two of video.

Thanks Q...

Bill your point is a valid one and i can see where you are coming from...in my videos i try to not only look at spot in the front, but also spot downlane where they are crossing....the problem is when you have a ball that really picks up in the midlane vrs a ball that is all skid snap (an example off the top of my head is radar alert vrs radar or Black Widow vrs toxic) they may be projecting through the heads and mids at the same angle but due to the "skid snap" being super clean through the front and the mids you will see the ball skate farther to the outside

Ex....maybe im throwing my black widow 18 to 10...taking that same angle with my toxic, the toxic may skate out to 8 before it picks up

And q u are right there is alot of work involved in doing these videos but its all worth it when done right...i do videos to educate the bowler on that certain balls reaction, and unless the video will accomplish that i wont even consider putting it together...

i shot some video of my total NV one time and had every intention of putting a video together but there would have been nothing learned from it due to the balls dramatic over/under reaction i was seeing on that shot....the reaction was not "true"

I have been on Hiatus here as of late with the videos due to no new releases but i will have 300 global and amf300 balls shortly along with the new banger balls and the ogres i just recieved...so watch out for a ton of them coming soon!

I do vids for fun.  Whether on my motorcycle or at the bowling center.

Now that I have a bulletcam, I plan on setting it up down the lane at the break-point, at the foul line and other places for some more dynamic videos.

The best videos I've seen are the Roto-grip ones of the RS line.  Throw one ball, it hits the pocket.  Throw the next one in the series, it's too strong, picks up too early, and leaves a 3-10 going through the nose.  Show the adjustment that was made to get that ball to work.  Now do it again with the next one in line.  There were a few Track videos a few years ago showing the Phenom and Freak and some other combos that did a similar thing.  Brunswick's been doing that with their newer releases.
