Video of a teammate and I, part 2 (hammer psycho!)
« on: July 21, 2008, 12:59:32 PM »
Not the same teammate as last time for those of you who saw my topic a couple months ago. Took some video last month, but didn't have a firewire cable to upload. You'd be correct in assuming I now have one, so here's the videos. Any criticism/comments welcome, as we don't have any notions of grandeur about our games.

Me:

Not me:

Oh for reference, he's throwing a V2 Sweet, and I was somehow allowed to buy a Psycho when they barely came out.

If I recall, it's drilled 4.5" by 50 degrees or around there, with the pin 1" from my VAL (so pretty high off the midline).  Keep in mind, mine hooks so much because my style is Mr. Grip and Turn, and I don't have a huge amount of speed.

You: Pretty good. You tend to stand up at the release point a little, you'd be better off holding your position at the foul line. In combination with this lift of your body, you also accelerate the ball through the release point. This has the effect of making your ball more angular, but also less predictable. One way to stop this is to find a "trigger" word you can say to yourself as you release the ball that tells your body to relax.

Not you: A more definite pushaway should eliminate the "need" to lift the ball in the backswing. He also, like you, tends to accelerate the bal through the release point and has that little body lift at the line, probably as a result of watching you . Also, if you look in Bowling This Month last month, there's a little piece on approach development that would be useful, also available on this site, specifically, the section regarding stepping across on the first step (tightrope). This odes the job of clearing the right leg to allow the ball to swing through.

Thanks for the advice.  I really like that thought about the trigger word, seems simple enough to do.  Thank you for that link, lots of good information there that I'll make sure to pass on to my friend.  I'm obviously not a pro caliber bowler, but it's always nice to know what techniques the pros are using to maximize their games and try to apply the same to myself to score better.

Heh, I find it's one of Queens more underappreciated songs.

On a side note, judging by the lack of comments, either we're Hall of Famers or worse than Joe Bowler and can't be helped.
